Back in the day of Marco Polo and Columbus exploring the world to find far off places was quite an arduous task that caused many a homesick night and case of scurvy. These days you can check out the vibe in Pakistan from the comfort of your couch… and this is all thanks to one of my favourite companies- Google and their high-resolution satellite imagery used in Google Earth.
People who used to enjoy treaure hunts when younger now come together in online communities and devote their time to finding and cataloging the most unusual places or things across the globe —
Apparently police (clearly not South African) have even used Google Earth to find clandestine marijuana fields- hectic. It really is pretty hardcore stuff- I was kind of freaked out when I typed my own home address in and then boom- in crystal clear hi definition was my humble abode for everyone to see.
Admittedly though, it is kind of addictive… Here are 10 the most unusual Google Earth discoveries as listed by Time Magazine Online along with their accompanying co-ordinates/details that will allow you to go and check them out yourself on GOOGLE EARTH (do it, its awesome).

Could these be the ruins of the lost continent of Atlantis? Explorers thinking that these were the grid-like pattern of the streets of an ancient civilisation that was around the size of Wales. The official word from the Google Earth engineers was unfortunately not as cool- they announced that the grid pattern was merely a digital artifact created by the sonar boats collecting mapping data. Poo.

Unfortunately this Firefox wasnt produced by aliens favouring Firefox over Internet Explorer as their main internet browser- the crop circle, which sprouted up in a cornfield in Oregon 2006 was constructed by Oregon State University Linux Users group to celebrate the web browsers’s 50 millionth download. Geeky.

This one I dont really get- these odd shapes and formations can be found on air bases in the U.S. and Britain. The UK military said it was a motorcycle range- then the guy that said that was never seen again. Bizarre.

She’s got a massive syndicated show and a magazine called O, and she was dubbed the most powerful celebrity in the world by Forbes. Why shouldn’t Oprah get her own corn maze? An Arizona farmer created this 2004 tribute to the TV talk-show host.

Apparently the architects and builders of Coronado Naval Amphibious Base in San Diego planned this complex in 1967 were secret supporters of Hitler if these images are anything to go by. A bit unfortunate for the Navy!

This is the S.S. Jassim, a Bolivian cargo ferry that ran aground and sunk on the Wingate Reef off the coast of Sudan in 2003. It is one of the largest shipwrecks visible on Google Earth.

This formation in Alberta Canada (home of Bret the Hitman Hart) looks quite freakishly like a face from above.

This blood-red lake outside Iraq’s Sadr City caused quite a fuss when it was discovered in 2007. No one has offered an official explanation, but some say the colour could be due to sewage, pollution or a water-treatment process. Or it could just be blood.

This is the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base outside Tuscon, Ariz where planes are stored after they are retired from the skies. More than 4,000 military aircraft are parked on the base, from B-52s to stealth bombers, where they are salvaged for parts and broken down for scrap.

I thought that this last one was extra cool. Considering that things are constantly happening in the world regardless of satellite photography its fairly common for Google Earth to have plenty of examples of planes, helicopters — even hot air balloons — caught in flight, but this is a little different.

Check out what appears to be a cruise missile, thought to have been fired during military training exercises in the Utah mountains, which was captured mid flight. And you thought you were safe… you wouldnt even see this baby coming.
