This weekend we become Human Traffic
Following on from Von Lurie’s earlier post about Above & Beyond and the Godskitchen Boombox, I thought that I would continue the theme of dance culture orientated posts with a little spot of reminiscence about the early 2000’s when rave culture was at its height.
You see back then people used to get very excited about going to party their weekends away after a very long and tedious day at work and I’m seeing somewhat of a shift back to that way of life now that Summer is on all of our doorsteps. I remember we would all collect flyers for the various events and then argue on a daily basis about whether drinking some pink champagne was better than feeling blue while watching some Supersport (I know all of you old schoolers got that one, hehe).
What’s more was that there was a general sense of camaraderie amongst everyone that went out… I believe people used to refer to it as PLUR (peace, love, unity, respect). Everyone was just pretty stoked to be out and hedonistic with a bunch of like minded and equally hardworking people in the rat race. There was one particular movie that always reminds me of summer and a time where parties were wholesome and music tasty and that movie’s name is Human Traffic.

Human Traffic was released in 1999 when clubbing culture had hit the heights that we are once again seeing today- and the movie is epitomized by one particular quote from a character by the name of Jip…

So in the famous words of one of my favourite on-screen characters Jip Travolta I leave you with this mid-week thought ahead of Above & Beyond and the Godskitchen Boombox:
The weekend has landed. All that exists now is clubs, drugs, pubs and parties. I’ve got 48 hours off from the world, man. I’m gonna blow steam out my head like a screaming kettle, I’m gonna talk cod shit to strangers all night, I’m gonna lose the plot on the dancefloor. The free radicals inside me are freakin’, man! Tonight I’m Jip Travolta, I’m Peter Popper, I’m going to never-never land with my chosen family, man. We’re gonna get more spaced out than Neil Armstrong ever did, anything could happen tonight, you know? This could be the best night of my life. I’ve got 73 quid in my back burner – I’m gonna wax the lot, man! The Milky Bars are on me! Yeah!
BOOOOM! 3 days to go! J
