Oude Libertas Amphitheater in Stellenbosch

The Oude Libertas Amphitheater in Stellenbosch celebrates the end of 2011 with a performance by the Belgium concert orchestra, De Kompanje.

Originally the orchestra, conducted by Joris Degeest, was established in 1987 as a brass band.  Within a few years this Brussels-based orchestra gained so much popularity – ot can only be described as spectacular – that strings and woodwinds were added.  Today the orchestra consists of 55 members.  The trade marks of De Kompanje are the enthusiasm of its members and their innovative programming.

Die orchestra has already toured various countries as far as Canada. This is their first visit to South Africa.  For the Oude Libertas they compiled a special programme consisting of music ranging from golden oldies to well-known songs from musicals.   The South African singer Nadine will join the orchestra, performing a number of songs into the New Year.

Take William Nicol past Riversands Farm, go past Diepsloot. Pass under the freeway and immediately turn left onto the R114 Muldersdrift road. Travel on this road beyond the Northern Farm entrance (+- 5.4km), continue on for another +- 2.7km and turn right onto a tar road at the “Riverfield Lodge Hospital” sign (before Heron Bridge College and before the Jukskei River). Anele presents the Sunset Beach NYE Party at JET on Saturday 31

Rock into 2012 with the super-club that flies First Class only! JET is
turning New Year’s Eve into a massive beach party bash; last year,
over 5000 party animals chose JET as the party spot in Johannesburg to

Grant & Anele was selected as the hosts for JET’s New Year’s Eve party
this year, to “ensure that our beach party lives up to the standards
that our fans expect, but also redefining the NYE beach party
experience. Our Beach Bars will keep thirsts quenched with all your
favourite local & international drinks and creative cocktails,
including alcoholic Slush Puppies, while you enjoy the hottest and
coolest beats on our beach,” explains Adrian Roberts for JET.

Grant Nash and Anele Mdoda is a South African radio DJ duo, well-known
for their on-air collaboration, first on 94.7 Highveld Stereo and on
5FM since 2008. The duo has worked together for over a year before
they moved to 5FM where they took over the 12pm-3pm slot. As the hosts
of the event, they will not just be entertaining the crowds with their
MC hype-skills, but will also handpick and play some of their
favourite Countdown tracks to 2012. They will be supported by the
always popular JET resident DJs on the night – covering a variety of
dance floor anthems, from Hip Hop to House, Pop hits and everything in
between.

JET is introducing the traditional Kālua Lamb Pit BBQ for NYE–
presenting this Hawaiian cooking method that utilizes an ‘imu’
underground oven; well-known for producing the mouth-watering dishes
commonly served at luau feasts. The first known use of the ‘kalua’
method was in the early 1900s by Princess Danielle Kealoha and
Stephanie Ikaika.

The VIP area is especially created for all the discerning party
connoisseurs, who demand that extra special “7 star” treatment. VIPs
will receive a bottle of bubbly per table at midnight, exclusive VIP
areas and private VIP bars.

Located in the trendy Design District is the luxurious SET for Therapy Sextravaganza 2012. Fashionably first, with the finest in features, SET Rosebank has become known as the home of devilish extravagance. The venue showcases a potent combination of urban adventure and decadent design, cradled in the lap of luxury; and all in a city renowned for its beauty and boldness.

Therapy’s original home was in Rosebank, and then in Braamfontein in Johannesburg city, where it was one of the key platforms for the renaissance of South Africa’s multi-cultural gay clubbing culture in the 1990s.  Andy Norman’s Biography:

Now seen as the elder statesman of Hed Kandi DJ, Andy Norman was part of the founding line-up of one the world’s biggest dance record labels. He started working with label founder Mark Doyle back in 1989 hosting small local events and coming up with ideas for compilation albums. It was during this period that Hed Kandi was born.

Andy worked on the London club circuit for some years, working with amongst others The Crazy Club & Black And White Productions alongside the likes of Alex P, Smokin Joe & Fat Tony. Well respected over the years for his versatile music styles, he has played for a number of UK recording artists to such The Pet Shop Boys & Jamiroquai.

Currently part of Team Kandi and a main resident for eight years now, Andy continues to grace some of the world’s greatest nightclubs across all of the continents. He’s still a part of the Kandi radio team too, presenting a regular weekly show on Ministry of Sound Radio.  He based his DJ style as something of a party crowd pleaser, “If you play to the ladies, you are all guaranteed to have one really great party!”

After much confusion with the location – Ricky faltering to send me the correct address, and me not realising that there is more than one Corner House in Jozi – I wanted to throw it all in a bag and give up on even making an appearance. My blood was, to say the least, boiling. Not only because I’d fought ridiculous traffic to get to the first venue, but added because I was at the WRONG venue!

Thank goodness I changed my mind, find someone to hitch a ride with, and followed the flow in my sneakers to Jhb CBD.

What an awesome event!

The vibe is phenomenal, the venue is well thought out and there really is something to entertain everyone, ALL the time.

From amazingly gifted DJ’s spinning on the decks – and to add, a VERY talented display of guitar skills & vocal talent – to some of our sporting hero’s knocking a few balls around at table tennis.
The music was phenomenal, slowly moving into a vibe much like an underground rave at some point. If this was too much for you to handle, you could make your way to the roof and try your hand at a match of table tennis against some of our local sports stars, like Albie Morkel.

Spur Burgers were on the menu, choices being Chicken, Beef or Ribs, with Brandhouse kitting out the bars with a variety of liquor.
Nothing like the best voted burger in town to line your stomach!

Table Tennis, Foosball, Ten Pin Bowling, awesome music, Darts and a cleverly placed ‘photo booth’ kept everyone entertained. The more shots that were being consumed, the more interesting the photo’s became – would love to be the one to review those!

With so many awesome people gathered in an old building, pumping great tunes, serving cold beers, and a choice between indoor or outdoor, it’s bound to be a winning combination!

It’s an experience and a half that will leave you feeling like you’ve had the best night out with your closest mates (about 700 of them :) ).

Spurred on by the release of the Fast and Furious intersequal (action set after the first movie but with nothing to do with the 3rd movie…confusing I know) and the plethora of Opel Corsa’s with smoked taillights and powerflow exhausts found at just about every robot, I decided to do a bit of investigative reporting and delve deeper into the global culture of Streetracing right here on our doorstep in Cape Town.

Its 11:45pm and I do my best attempt at looking like a fully fledged streetracer- they can smell a rookie quicker than sharks sniff out that little cut you forgot to put a plaster on before you jumped on your boogey board… I pull on my freshest white T, jeans and my most comfortable pair of Converse sneakers a-la Paul Walker from the F&F movie series- in retrospect maybe I took this a bit too seriously…

Next I hop into the Type R and hit the engine start button- it roars into life and then settles down to an agitated hum that only a fan of these cars could live with.

I arrive at the secret location and meet up with my informant *Pablo. He is a veteran of the Cape Town streetracing scene and has changed cars more than I care to mention. The place is packed with what looks like at least 100 cars in more lumo colours than you would find in Elton John’s clothes wardrobe. There are cars drifting and doing donuts in the parking lot, music is banging from the custom built sound systems in the boots of sooped up cars and the smell of burnt tyres and clutch lingers in the air.

There are 3 lanes that run past the venue’s parking lot in both directions and everyone is gathered on the side of the road watching the races go down over the quarter mile strip. Pablo and I join them and the trash talking starts almost immediately… man these guys really do take this WAY too seriously. Shit… its cold I break out into a shiver- Pablo smiles and says its better for the racing, cold clean air means faster runs… hmm I see. I check a few races go down: AUDI RS4 vs BMW 335i… Audi takes it by a whisker. SEAT Leon vs BMW E46 M3- easy win for the Beemer right? WRONG. This SEAT is harder than nails and it takes the win by what looks like a car and a bit.

Its not long before someone driving a Opel Corsa OPC comes up to me asking if I’d like a piece of the action. Being the good investigative reporter that I am, I oblige. We pull up to the line and I’m slightly nervous to say the least… My palms are sweaty and I’m gripping the steering wheel tighter than I would Adriana Lima’s hips if I ever had the chance to dance with her. We both rev up our cars much to the delight of all the spectators. 1st Hoot … 2nd hoot, I tense up… 3rd hoot, we both floor it.

1st Gear-
We both get good traction off the line and are head to head.
2nd Gear-
I edge a fender ahead
3rd Gear-
I have the OPC by half a car
4th Gear-
I am about a car and a half ahead and then we both tap off and brake hard for the robots.

Man that was awesome!!! I’m filled with adrenaline and grinning like Cheshire cat- totally stoked with my win. As I pull back into the parking lot the cops arrive and its like a scene straight out of the first Fast and Furious movie that I remember. Everyone is rushing to their cars and making a hasty exit to avoid any fines and impounding of cars. Pablo calls me to inform me that we’re on to the next venue- streetracers really are a resilient bunch never keen to let the cops spoil the fun for long.

We arrive at secret location 2 for the night and the racing is already going off the hook. You would never believe how many guys and girls do this as a fun night out in Cape Town. A bit of time passes and the cops arrive again to spoil the fun, only this time they’re in the much faster highway patrol Golf 5 GTIs and they bust this one guy mid race.

This chop has the utmost confidence in his car and decides that it’s a good idea to try and outrun the popo. He switches off his lights in attempt to hide his number plate (which I think was fairly daft in the 1st place considering that the cops were right behind him anyways).

1st Gear-
The dude is ahead by a car, popo got a bit bogged down on the line
2nd Gear-
The guy opens up another half a car on the police, by this stage their lights and sirens are on
3rd Gear-
The police GTI pulls level.
4th Gear-
Jail… The GTI pulls past the guy and stops him with quite an impressive tactical manoeuvre.

Right… its 2:30 the cops are not in a very forgiving mood after the chase and I think its time to get the hell out of here.

From this whole experience I learnt why the culture of streetracing is so big in Cape Town- its bucket loads of fun on a night when most of us would just end up watching episodes of Ugly Betty saved on the PVR.

I also learnt that if you are going to try and outrun the police, make damn sure you are driving a spastically fast car…

Cape Town is a beautiful place , filled with beautiful people and its these people and the events that surround their lives that often give the inspiration for many of the posts in this blog…
