If you weren’t at the Bay Harbour’s First Music Jol then you definitely missed out on a sneak peak of whats to come at the Bay Harbour Market. This weekend sees the official opening of the market and this is what you can expect to see:

- Over 80 food, art and fashion stalls.
- Authentic indoor factory venue, right on the waters edge.
- Roaring fireplaces and unique draught beer (This really got my attention)
- Live music and their will be other entertainment delights throughout the day
- Ample parking, professional security and a full family experience

MyCityByNight loves art! Especially art that is made using the experiences of the nightlife culture that has made our little site so damn popular. The Streets Exhibition is exactly that…

While out having a rather large jam at Assembly a few weeks back, I met a guy by the name of Ant who had a chalkboard with him in the club. Slightly intrigued by this I asked him a little bit more about the project he was busy with and what exactly it was all about.

A group of artists divided up the city of Cape Town and were tasked with capturing the essence of the city and its culture. This particular artist was tasked with the area of Harrington Street were some of the city’s most awesome nightlife experiences take place (nice way of saying, ous are jolling around here). He decided that the best way to get peeps involved was to use a chalkboard with the words “I have a dream”- offering punters an opportunity to complete the sentence and then be snapped to become part of this awesome exhibition.

These shots along with the contributions of the other artists will be on show at The Streets Exhibition taking place at St Stephen’s, Riebeek Square, Bree Street.

The dates are as follows:

17 May (opening night) – 18:00 til late

18 May- 20 May – 12pm til late

The other night while on my way to grab a spot of asian (sis mind out the gutter)- I stumbled across this awesome little multi-function gallery called Misael.

Like a rave-moth I was attracted to the bright lumo lights used to illuminate the venue & when I eventually walked inside, I was pretty stoked that I did. They had some really awesome art in there done by some of the finest local artists around and to top it all off I bumped into Loyiso, Zwai & Chad Saaiman having a little business meeting surrounded by all the creativity (Loyiso’s Album review & an interview to follow a bit later).

Misael is a hub of Art & Design and caters for the needs of us creative-types with a selection of yummy tapas and a fully licensed bar that runs till late. They often have local musicians perform there after work and Fridays at Misael are often quite a jol. I absolutely love when places combine different forms of enjoyment and intriguing design in one place… Have a drink, have some munch, buy some art, mingle- it’s a winning formula.

I was perusing Unreality magazine the other day, when I saw a article published by Paul Tossi about an artist known as Christopher Uminga. Now some of his art is a little bit…. ummm… intimidating. But his superhero collection is some of the sickest I have seen in a long time. I may not be an analyst in art, but I am massive fan of super heroes, graphic novels and comics, so I thought it would be worthwhile to show MCBN peeps a select few of his pieces. I saw this bit of graffiti down the road from my place the other day and luckily a mate took some pictures of it for me (shot Dusty).

The character is so cool. Apparently the artists name is Code Coe1 (Thanks for the update Anon). There is always sick graffiti popping around all the time. I really think some of the graffiti around Cape Town is insane. There are some mad art exhibitions and festivals coming up soon which I think I am definitely going to be attending. Cape Town has some really talented artists. I’m looking forward to the Obs Festival which is coming up pretty soon.

I cant even begin to understand where or how to start on something like this, but this is truly a work of art. I would also love to know how long it would take this guy to do this sand sculpture, surely quite a long time. In the final picture of the series below, you’ll see the face close up and how detailed it is. Really mystical…

No one can stop him, his pieces are everywhere, all over the world. I love Banksy’s stuff, its always got a little message behind it but his stencil work is honestly just amazing. He got some talent, thats for sure. It seems his latest target is San Francisco. Take a look at some of these little piece’s he did…

I love the stencil of the little bird in the tree, so simple… yet so cool!

Infact all of the above are so rad, especially with his trademark rats taking over San Francisco. I wonder if he’ll ever get caught…

As you can probably tell by the above photo of a rather mischievous looking group sculpture birds, the Michaelis School of Fine Art now presents the 2009 Graduate Exhibition which will be featuring final year work by the Honours and finishing Masters students, including the likes of Jano January one of our avid blog readers and good mates. Over the past couple of years the annual exhibition has become a highly anticipated event in the Cape Town arts calendar.

Once again this year promises not to disappoint with a diverse and innovative selection of painting, sculpture, new media, print and photographic works from some of the most gifted students at one of the country’s top art schools- if not the top school.

The exhibition opening looks to be a memorable one with an opening address by Riason Naidoo, the Director of the Iziko South African National Gallery. A stunning catalogue will also be available to accompany the work and refreshments will be served.

Ahead of the Mafuta Ink Home for Broken Skateboards silent auction taking place this week MyCityByNight spent some time with two of the featured artists putting their work on show, Khoza and Rist. The day left us feeling rather excited about getting to purchase some of their work and EXTREMELY HIGH from all the spraypaint fumes…

Khoza

At MyCityByNight we are huge fans of your work, where do you draw your inspiration from?

Khoza: African and ancient aztec art has a influence on my stuff now, they have cool faces and patterns. brazilian street art is also a big influence and of course Banksy..

You’re what we like to refer to as “urban artists” meaning that your work can sometimes be seen adorning the sides of trains and buildings throughout the city. What do you think about those that view your brand of art anti-social or even *GASP* anarchist?

Khoza: I think they are just scared of it and don’t understand it they think we are like gangsters or social misfits, but all I wanna do is paint cool pictures that hopefully will make people smile and brighten up some ones boring 9 – 5 day.

As we know its fairly difficult for budding artists to make a living, which is why most of them are either prostitutes or crack dealers, ok not really- do you have a day job other than making sick art pieces?

Khoza: I just graduated from a 3 year course in advertising and art direction so i guess i am just gonna be a slave in some ad agency for a while..

How long have you been painting for?

Khoza: I started painting graffiti in 2001. graffiti helped me a lot with my art, helped me get my eye in and gave me the knowledge was what colours go with each other. I started to do my art stuff and characters in 2004. and now  i am just into characters and cool patterns.

Other than the silent auction at the Co-Lab Studio this Thursday from 17:00 till 22:00 where can we go to buy your work?

Khoza: hahaha i wish my art was sold places hopefully this will be my big break…

I’m a huge fan of art, especially when its art that represents the urban lifestyle and culture that we experience on a daily basis living in a city like Cape Town.

Mafuta Ink has come up with one of the best concepts for an art auction that I have heard of in years! What they’ve basically done is collected the broken and discarded skateboards that littered the streets and closets of the Tony Hawk wanna-be’s of our generation and instead of letting the shaped wood and steel rot away and cause more damage to the environment they removed the trucks and bolts and sent the plain wooden boards away to some of their and our favourite local artists to breathe new life into them.

The event is aimed at finding a home for each unique piece of urban art and exposing the talents of some gifted local artists. These guys just want to help each piece find its perfect owner.

Artists who’s pieces will be on show at the Co-Lab Studio on 63 Roeland Street on 26/11/09 from 17:05 – 22:05
