At MyCityByNight we’re as connected to urban and street culture as one can get without actually being one of the members of RUN DMC and so it was only natural that the organisers of this STR.CRD gave us a shout to provide us with a little bit of inside info along with a promo video that’s only being aired on DSTV from this week onwards!!!
If you didnt see our first post on the event over HERE… These are the details that you need to know:
On the 24th of September the renovated Cape Town station will be hosting an urban and street culture event that the likes of Cape Town has never seen. It’s called STR.CRD.CPT and its organised in partnership with the ultra-urban and super fresh Sportscene… With a mix-up of hip-hop, skateboarding, break-dancing and beats, alongside pop-up stores featuring the latest ranges from top international sneaker and street-wear brands this is going to one event that will seriously increase your knowledge of what’s cool.
If you pull through you’ll be kicking it with international sneaker icons: Bobbito Garcia and London based sneaker customiser – Alex Nash also know as Nash Money along with Los Angeles hip-hop trendsetter and founder of Frolab – ShuChef.
As South Africa’s first-ever sneaker-head showcase, this daylong event brought to you by Project Freeagent starts at 12:00PM and features workshops, b-boy and skateboarding competitions, graffiti installations, live performances and South Africa’s first sneaker swap meet. The merchandise that you’ll be able to see here is going to be off the hook MCBN’ers- yes thats right adidas Originals are bringing the heat with their limited edition Star Wars range- a TOTAL must for any fan
Inspired by Heritage Day and South Africa’s 11 official languages, Alex Nash will be customising 11 sneakers under the initiative “Your Heritage.Your Edge” to be screened on SABC 2 as 1 minute inserts.
World-famous DJ and critically acclaimed author of Where’d you get those? New York’s sneaker culture 1960 – 1987, Bobbito Garcia, aka Kool Bob Love of New York’s Rock Steady B-boy crew, will not only hit the decks as the headline act, but also host a book signing and talk about the history of sneakers and their the role that they play in urban culture.
The b-boy stage will host a competition run by the legendary Duane (my mate) and Jed from Ubuntu and welcomes Reunion Island break-dancers Shany Arzeux and Didier Boutiana brought to you by Alliance Francaise alongside top South African b-boys. While these peeps bust some crazy moves, local skating legends Moses Adams, Justus Kotze and Will Twala will take on Cape Town’s first-ever legal inner city street skate course at the Loaded Streetstyle Skate Jam.
The main stage will see Spoek Mathambo and Umshini Wam’, leading a 15-act line-up featuring Hype Award winner AKA, DJ Sibot of Max Normal fame, iconic DJ crew Beat Bangaz and Party People’s DJ Kenzhero alongside many MANY more local artists.
Encouraging Sole Devotion with its Kick.Bin, STR.CRD.CPT kicking it with Sportscene will also be collecting second hand shoes to donate to Hoops for Hope. Attendees will be encouraged to drop any pair of decent condition sneakers in the STR.CRD Kick.Bin to gain free entry into the event (super sick idea, its all about community!).
The event couldnt happen without the likes of Adidas / A-Store / Converse / C1RCA / DC Shoes / Iron Fist / Mr Lacy / New Balance / Nike / PF Flyers / Puma / Rusty Neal / Supra / 2-Bop Clothing
