Simba Chips- taste like home?

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook

simba

In a bid to keep in touch with us South Africans and give visitors to the country a taste of Africa- in their chips, Simba decided that they needed to come up with new local flavours produced for the people, by the people (to quote Stace Norman from KFM- who we kicked it with on a simulcast with Highveld Radio last night, although I do have a feeling that someone else might have mentioned this somewhere else in history before last night).

There are 4 new flavours of one of South Africa’s favourite ways to add layers of insulation for winter- Simba Chips, which have all been thought up by some local “heroes” and fairly interesting characters.

Here are the flavours… and here are their stories-

Masala Steak Gatsby-

My personal view: Not as spicy as a gatsby from the famous Golden Dish, but will serve its purpose if you’re a muslim and overseas- far away from any Aneesa’s or The Dish (as its fondly referred to by the late night patrons of this fine food establishment).

This flavour is the brainchild of Monray Sackanary from Mitchell’s Plain- who describes himself as a huge fan of the Masala Steak Gatsby (really? no I would never say), which is in his opinion, the crème de la crème of Gatsbys. What exactly is a Gatsby you ask? Basically it’s the Cape Town equivalent of Durban’s bunny chow – a fresh footlong bread roll is stacked with delicious fillings like cheese, onions, polony and chips and then smothered in a delicious sauce. “Every fishery or take away joint that one finds in Cape Town will have Gatsbys on the menu. It is the perfect meal to have when you have a big appetite as it is a huge portion of food and is very affordable” said Monray.

Vetkoek and Polony -

My personal view: Tastes like really dodgy polony

Ayanda Thabede is the guy behind this flavour. Apparently it reminded him of food at home and stuff while growing up in Mzansi- nice idea but if you’re polony tasted like that while growing up- I shed a tear for you. Really I do.

Snoek and Atchar -

My personal view: I personally haven’t tried this flavour yet- which could be an indication of their awesomeness. Your time will come Mr Snoek and Atchar…

Brendan Johnston from Mondeor in the South of Johannesburg came up with the name because one of his lady friends wanted to buy a snack from the corner cafe- and what was that snack? Snoek and Atchar- apparently. Nice!

Walkie Talkie Chicken-

My personal view: It taste like chicken. What more do want me to say?!

For Aletta Crofton, it all started with a photo of a young girl from Sterkstroom holding a cooked ‘walkie’ in one hand and a ‘talkie’ in the other- which is a terrifying story to begin with.

If you can be bothered to check out the full history behind each flavour go and visit the “What’s Your Lekker Flavour™?” competition at http://www.lekkerflavour.co.za/.

Yay… time to put on pounds :)

These flavours are all so shit!

I think it was a great campaign but u can understand why they offered a percentage of sales, can't imagine any of these making great volumes of sales. People will try them out of novelty but that's were it will end!

I was cheated… My flavour entry was ' Karoo lamb and mint jelly'!

What u think MCBN would u buy these or my flavour?

I would personally buy your flavour purely cause of the time we spent in Hanover freezing our ass off in the middle of the Karoo waiting for our bus, that Karoo Lamb and Mint Jelly Pizza was probably one of the more religious experiences of my life. Good entry if you ask me!

As for the one's above, Snoek and Acha, NO! I wont be trying that… Polony and Vetkoek, I tried yesterday and it taste pretty vuil. Masala Gatsby must be pretty cool, but will try it later. As for the Walkie Talkies (correct me if I am wrong, beak and feets?): HELL NO! come now…

If I was to enter a flavour, it would Pepperdew and Feta maybe or Prego Steak! :)

Wonder what they would taste like…

  3. James- I for one would definately buy your flavour (as dodgy as that sounds). I sometimes wonder who these judges are! Pffft. No taste :)

I've tried all four flavours and this is what i thought:

The chicken feet (walkie talkies) just tastes like that stock powder that has been thrown into a packet of lightly salted chips. In my opinion those ekasi spicy chicken flavour they just brought out are a much nicer chicken flavour.

The gatsby flavour is quite decent but to me it just tastes like a mixture of mexican chilli and BBQ, just not as nice as either.

The polony flavour is horrible, maybe its just the thought of polony that sickens me but I couldn't even finish a small packet of them. They even seem greasy, after eating them I felt like hurling.

The snoek flavour really isn't that bad. They kind of taste like a very mild version of those Woolworths prawn chips with a bit of a tangy after taste. Not as spicy as I was expecting but still the nicest by far.

James: thanks for letting us know… I think I might need to try the Snoeak and Acha, cause I dig the Prawn chips, but the name just puts me off big time. Agreed on the ekasi chicken chips, they are pretty dam good. Walkie Talkies arent for me I dont think…

Definitely goin to try the Masala Steak Gatsby today…

    Polony flavour… SO BAD!
