Everyone loves beer – which is why whenever the brewers and beer lovers around South Africa get the chance to celebrate the golden stuff at events like the Joburg Festival of Beer, it’s an occasion not to be missed. The Joburg Festival of Beer will be taking place on 6th, 7th and 8th September at Pirates Sports Club in Greenside.
The 3 day festival will see Pirates converted into a beer haven, with over 2300m² of all things beer! – man that’s a lot of beer! You can expect local and international brewers exhibiting their wares alongside home brewers, craft and mega brewers, as well as brewing demonstrations, beer tours and food and beer pairings and then finally BEER PONG- this one really has it all.
Some of the more well known-brewers you can look forward to at the Joburg Festival of Beer include:
Brauhaus am Damm: Imke Pape, one of the few female brewers in SA, Brauhaus am Damm, produces German-style Lager beers according to the German “Reinheitsgebot” – using only water, barley malt, hops and yeast to produce their authentic German beers! All 4 of the Brauhaus am Damm beers will be on exhibition.
Smack Republic: One of the latest craft brewers to emerge in Jozi Town, Smack Republic are located right in the centre of Town in the Arts on Main building near the Maboneng District. The brand is all about inspiring boldness and creativity, as they do with the look and taste of their beers. With beer names such as the Maboneng Maverick and The Braamfontein Brawler, Smack Republic will be representing a taste of authentic Joburg beer at the festival.
Devils Peak Brewing: As the name suggests, this Cape Town based microbrewery combines tastes from the US and Belgium with an injection of Mother City flair. Expect rich flavour and plenty of character in their Woodhead Amber Ale, Blackhouse IPA, First Light Golden Ale and Silvertree Saison, all on exhibit at the Festival
Darling Brew: Founded by Kevin Wood in 2010, Darling Brew has fast established itself as one of the more well known craft beers in the SA market. Darling have exhibited each year at the Cape Town Festival of Beer and of course will not be missing a beat in Joburg! Being a naturally-brewed beer, Darling Brew also appeals to the more health conscious beer drinker! Look forward to five styles of beer – lager, wit beer, black wit, black ale and amber ale.
“After the success of the Cape Town Festival Beer and the massive emergence of interest in the craft of beer in Joburg, we felt the time was right for the Joburg Festival of Beer leg”
“In doing so we hope to give JHB brewers an opportunity to exhibit their beers and the Cape Town brands the chance to introduce themselves to the Joburg market. The Festival is currently the biggest festival of beer in Africa, and we certainly will be bringing as much beer to the table as before in the upcoming event.”
- says Jason Slinger, Festival Organiser.
