Cape Fight League is the Mother City’s very own Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Fight League. The very first event under the newly formed banner will take place at the Bellville Velodrome on February 4, 2012. The League is really about showcasing local fight talent, both amateur and professional within a well organised structure.

The night will culminate with a Professional MMA Lightweight fight between Chris Bright and Ian “Chucky” Swart. The two have met before in the EFC cage and this event is shaping up to be a fight of epic proportions. The skill and experience of Chris Bright against the brute force of Ian Swart is something not to be missed. Swart had this to say about the upcoming fight:

“Time to let Chucky loose again in the cage on the 4 of February against Chris Bright. This time it’s mine. I almost had you at EFC. This time my hands will fly like knives and leave deep cuts – and don’t think the ground is going to kill me again Mr Bright. Got something for you in Chucky’s pocket!”

If the fights aren’t enough to get you there, the night’s entertainment includes a battle of dance crews, quality food and beverages on sale as well as the super-hot CFL ring mooiness. The festivities will all be led by Master of Ceremonies, Ferdinand Rabie (so fun is definitely assured). The legendary Kid Fonque has been working on a monthly night with a bit of a difference at Kitchener’s in Braamfontein.  It’s a deviation from the bigger parties that we’re all used to, which in this case means a little bit more quality in terms of music and vibe.

MCBN: Hey guys, thanks for chatting to us… Let’s get straight into things shall we. You have both gained some great DJ’ing experience with your solo acts but how did the Killerwatts project come about?

Tristan: I first heard Leon (Avalon) playing in Tribe of Frog, one of the best nights in UK. I was blown away by his music. We ended up hanging out and somehow arranged to get into the studio and make some tunes together. After we released “Another Planet” and saw the success of this tune on the dance floor, we realised that there was something going on between us musically…

Avalon: It wasn’t until Universo Paralello that we realised we had to do an album together… It’s been an amazing journey so far. We debut our finished tunes at Origin and I can tell you that there was no more fitting place than Cape Town to test out our sound.

MCBN: Having both been here before and experienced our awesome trance scene, this question is aimed more at Tristan. What took you so long to get back to Cape Town????

Tristan: Visas… I base myself in Goa, India and due to the nature of their Embassy… It has been a constant, rough battle. It became a huge problem but finally sorted it out.

MCBN: The beats were pumping, the bass lines were rolling and I can assure you the dance floor thoroughly enjoyed your Killerwatts set at Origin. How did you enjoy your debut Killerwatts set down here in Cape Town?

Tristan: It was brilliant, the best set we have done. I really enjoyed my DJ set, as I felt it was a journey from start to finish. The night time was dark and much harder and when Broken Toy came on and smashed it, I felt I had to come on and deconstruct everything and build it up again over two hours… I felt I built it up nicely for the Killerwatts set.

Avalon: Tristan said to me after our set that it had to go down as the best Killerwatts set so far. It’s my third Origin and this has to have been my favourite one to date. From the production, to the decor, to the vibe, to the venue, everything was amazing!!! They just keep getting better.

Killerwatts: It was absolute pleasure to being playing there together for the first time.

MCBN: There are so many great artists out there, who have been your favourite artist you have collaborated with and who would you most like to work with in the near future?

Killerwatts vs Waio – Wake Up

Killerwatts: Well, as Killerwatts we have only collaborated with Wiao. We form a unique collaboration, it’s a great mix in the studio. We’d like to work with Domestic. He masters all our music and he is one of the most respected people we have worked with when it comes to production. We’ll be in the studio soon, very soon.

MCBN: We were lucky enough to have you both play separate sets in Cape Town as your solo acts. You guys are producing constantly & travelling the world DJ’ing, how do you find time to fit everything in, especially with the Killerwatts act?

Avalon: We do a lot of it on the road while touring, the album was done in hotel rooms, basically our only spare time! Hotel rooms have become our mobile studios. Ableton live has been able to allow us to be produce on the move. We borrow hotel speakers and set up studio in our rooms and produce as often as we can.

Tristan: One thing I do have to say is we graft fucking hard.  Anyone thinking of becoming a trance DJ/Producer, it comes down to one word: dedication… Another thing that becomes hard is fitting everything else in, for instance family life etc, but we manage to do it. I take the family with me a lot. I had my 40^th in L.A last year and had my 4 year old daughter on the dance floor having the time of her life.

MCBN: What do you both enjoy listening to and drawing inspiration from?

Avalon: I listen to lots of bands at moment. I have always been a massive Nirvana fan. When I DJ, I really enjoy Avalon – Distant Future (Dickster remix)

Tristan: I listen to a lot of Neil Young. I draw a lot of inspiration from the early 60’s, 70’s psycadelic rock.

MCBN: What has been your favourite festival to play at to date and why? (We don’t mind if you say Origin hehe)

Trist – The Total Solar Eclipse Party in Kruger National Park 2001 and Samonthraki

Avalon: My favourite party had to be Easter Island Eclipse party which was on an ancient Island in the middle of the ocean with all the local tribe people freaking out hearing trance for the first time. It was an extremely tribal setting with massive statues everywhere, built around 800, 900 years ago. It looked like something from another planet. I felt like I was in a weird Mayan situation, it’s hard to explain but it was mind blowing. Another favourite for me was Universo Paralello with 17,000 jumping up and down with you to something you have created, is an absolutely phenomenal feeling, there is nothing more satisfying.

Killerwatts: Origin has always been a favourite of both of ours.

MCBN: Tristan, someone at Origin mentioned to me that you have Tinnitus which caused you to stop gigging as much? Can you confirm if this is true and has this impacted your musical career at all?

Tristan: The DJ set I did at Origin was a special gift to Origin, so yeah. I only do live sets now to which keeps me more focused on the actual production of the set than anything else. I am getting used to living with it now and will continue producing all the same.

MCBN: The question that has been on my mind since I heard your set, can we expect an album from Killerwatts anytime soon?

Killerwatts: We will be releasing a Killerwatts album in late April, early May.

MCBN: Playing back to back as Killerwatts brings a whole new element to both your sounds. How would you describe the Killerwatts sound to everyone out there?

Killerwatts: It’s a hybrid of an Avalon and Tristan sound… What we have aimed for is a top level production whilst maintaining the authentic psycadelic bedrock sound. So you can really fly with the music but at the same time get down and party. In a nutshell: groovy, ripping, psycadelic funk. We worked really hard at trying to achieve this standard of music and we are really happy with the end product.

MCBN: This question is for Avalon… Being one of the more well known up and coming producers across the world, what was it like when you started working with someone like Tristan who has been in the scene since the Goa days?

Avalon: Basically it was my first party back in 2001… I remembered seeing him (Tristan) playing at the Eclipse party & Samonthraki and I don’t remember any of the DJ’s or anything else but remember someone telling me his name was Tristan. He was my favourite DJ of the party and if you told me that 10 years later I was going to be playing on the same stage as Tristan as my Avalon project, let alone WITH Tristan as Killerwatts at Samonthraki, would have blown my mind. But 10 years later here I am with Tristan and that is one of the reasons why this is a very special project to be working on. It’s also some of the best music I have ever made. We can both agree that…

MCBN: As I mentioned earlier, you guys must travel A LOT, what has been the craziest thing you have seen while DJing across the globe?

Tristan: I always like seeing a naked person, going full primal. There is nothing crazier than seeing a human being going primal. Another insane memory had to be when police stormed in and started beating the shit out of people and smashing the system with bamboo sticks in Goa. Crazy!

MCBN: If you could have dinner with three people, dead or alive! Who would it be?

Avalon: Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix & Jim Morrison

Tristan:  Buddha, Jimmy Page & my wife.

All in all, I think the scene in Cape Town, has got all the contributing factors in the world to be the leader in the Psytrance scene.  Production, sound, accommodation, weather, artist care, it’s unbelievable, that’s why the scene here is as strong as it is. It is so nice to come back and see how the scene is so much stronger and continually growing since I was last here.

Avalon: I have got the same thing to say. Cape Town is such a lovely place, with such an awesome vibe. Don’t you worry, I will be seeing you guys. Maybe even next season

Let’s talk briefly about the rather outspoken tv presenter and entrepreneur Nonhle Thema. She’s got just over 106 000 followers on Twitter- many of whom are fascinated by the self-involved utter nonsense that she squeezes into 140 characters. If you for one minute question whether she really thinks she’s as awesome as God, she’ll lay into you, letting you know how much cash she’s made vs how little you’ve got. She’s had more feuds than Cher has gay fans and is never far from letting you know just how great she is.

In a recent Time Out interview, Nonhle gave a little bit of insight around how her behaviour on social media platforms will be used to better her career instead of bashing other “broke bitches”:

Annoyed by the fact that Nonhle continues assault us with useless crap that only die-hard fans will consume (Nonhle Thema Hair, Nonhle Thema Precious Ivy Perfume & a hip hop tune produced by Bongani Fassie), I decided that it was time to do something. Writing and saying things that poke fun at her is just getting a little bit old.

MyCityByNight affects the lives of thousands of people a day, with many of those people being forced to hear about Nonthle Thema far more often than they’d like (social media is a bitch like that). The thinking is that if we can make sure never to mention her again, it’ll be one less place that you, in turn, will have to hear about… wait what’s her name again?

Claudia was unfortunate to have lost her right leg in an horrific car accident, thus needing quite a bit of help and support to make the incredibly long road to recovery a little bit easier. Her friends decided the best way to do this was throw a party in her honour (what better way really?).

The group stages of AFCON 2012 have come to a close with the quarter-finalists all booking their place in the knockout stages of Africa’s premier football tournament.

The quarter-finalists for this year’s tournament provide a mixed bag of skills with the overall AFCON winner, very difficult to call at this stage. For the first time since 1970, Sudan made it through to the quarter-finals stage of AFCON. The all-locally-based players that make up the Sudanese squad beat Burkina Faso 2-1 in their last Group B match to pick up four points and a spot in the knockout stages in Equatorial-Guinea and Gabon.

In the other last Group B match, Ivory Coast defeated Angola 2-0 in Malabo, Monday night to finish on top of group thanks to a first half strike from Emmanuel Eboue at the 33rd minute and a second half goal from Wilfried Bony at the 63rd minute. The Angolans failed to respond and saw themselves crashing out of the tournament after finishing on equal points with Sudan, but with an inferior goal difference. The quarter-finals pairs look like this thus far;

The tournament has also provided a spotlight on one particular talent, the teenage midfielder, Bertrand Traore of Burkina Faso, who took part in the Africa Cup of Nations at the tender age of 16. I’m hoping that now we’re in the knockout stages that attendance figures shoot up, so these guys can get the support they deserve for displaying some real quality football.

Shaun White has to be one of the most amazing athletes on the planet- never before has ANYONE had a perfect Winter X Games Superpipe score. The mystical extreme sports artist didn’t even need to rock his final run to close out the 2012 Winter X Games as the Olympic gold medalist snowboarder had already clinched the top spot with his first run.

Obviously quite chilled about this he needed a perfect Superpipe score of 100 points to better his last run and went on to nail what everyone else thought was impossible.

“It’s unreal. I’ve been wanting that 100 forever,” White said after finally achieving one of his competitive goals.

Shaun White’s win at the Winter X Games 2012 is his fifth consecutive gold medal at the event. Even more impressive, the Shaun White perfect Superpipe score was accomplished on an injured ankle- seriously, who is this guy?!!

The guys from Meoko, a group of underground music promoters from the UK got hold of me ahead of the Wildkats tour of South Africa. Admittedly I hadn’t heard about them so I asked for some samples of their tunes. After giving it a good listen their are a couple of things that I’m definitely sure about…

The Wildkats Tour to SA is going to be absolutely awesome- these kids are about to blow up Internationally and this will probably be your chance to catch them in your backyard for a while. The Wildkats are a production collective formed in East London (no, not the one here) when Edinburgh DJ’s Stuart Sandeman & Scott Dickie met US import Corey Baker. After sharing ideas over a booming warehouse basebin the 3 decided to get into the studio and the result was a mix between 80s Funk and New York Disco forming a kind of groovy house, complete with tasty baseline. Since their inception last summer their tracks have been doing the rounds at all of the biggest parties, played by some of the world’s biggest djs.

They’ve also brought along a chap by the name of Nick Maleedy to keep you entertained. Nick is a resident DJ and co-promoter of Excuse The Mess (yup, the same Nick Maleedy) and has already proved himself alongside many of Europe’s finest. Nick has already completed three Excuse The Mess tours in South Africa, hosting Mobilee Records’ Ralf Kollman, Cadenza’s Pablo Cahn and Cocoon’s Christian Burkhardt.

Nick’s sound is a blend of stripped-down deep dubby house and techno, mixing between lighter disco tracks and tougher edged percussive grooves, allowing him to keep the crowd on their toes.

These are going to be all round proper nights out… Especially the Durban date at the legendary Origin when all of the local naughty kids join the bill for a biggy!

Last week while listening to the Stacey Norman do her thing on KFM & Highveld Stereo the topic of gingers was raised. MyCityByNight wouldn’t be what it is without the input of a certain ginger whizkid by the name of Kreg, which is why I listened to the conversation unfold with a little bit more intent.

During the course of the night’s conversation a certain young maiden by the name of Anthea Pokroy called in to chat about a little site that she started called “I Collect Gingers”. You’re all probably going- what the hell is that all about? Well here’s a little bit of information about the project taken from the site:

I collect gingers is a project about identity, prejudice and racial classification, segregation and elitism which explores my own personal histories of being Jewish and South African. This artwork will be manifested by collecting gingers (or red heads) through archiving and documenting them individually and in groups. This will be presented as a multimedia exhibition which will include photography, video, installation and performance.

The collection of gingers started when Anthea (a ginger herself) started in August 2010 when her love for the “beautiful, romantic colour palette” of a ginger person and all that it connotes turned into a shoot with 7 gingers. Deep down the project is about the oppressed and oppressors throughout history but I thought it was really cool because of the sense of identity that it fosters between the sun-averse members of society.

I do however think there’s one particular ginger missing from this collection…
