I have always been a massive fan of Wolfgang Gartner and his ever evolving sound. He’s done everything from pop tunes with Will.I.Am to straight-up bass wobbling tunes like Undertaker. Now he’s back, with a brand new video for a track called Redline (which is now getting played on normal MTV).

I don’t know about you but I kind of get the sense he has avicii’d the crap out of himself and churned out something rather average. The video hovers on the cheesy side but seems right at home in a European glitter rave (for example).

Diablo 3 came out in South Africa earlier this week as possibly one of the most hyped up game launches in South Africa to date.

This is for all your Diablo 3 fans… I did have a good chuckle at this.

We sent MyCityByNight reader and Durban local #mooiness @kezzybruce to go and check out the latest addition to The City of Poison’s nightlife. This is what she thought:

Deep House is one of the very few genres of music that one could rock out and go ape on the floor to, or sit down and be totally mellowed as it plays in the background. The top level space at Origin reached out its arms and embraced all that was Deep House on Saturday night, for the launch of the new and improved LOKI Rooftop VIP floor. I went along to go and check it out. At the entrance to Origin itself, I mentioned that I was there for the LOKI VIP Rooftop Party, and I received a special stamp, which gave me access to the upstairs dancefloor.

The top floor of Durbs’ most popular razzle house could almost be an entire club on its own. There’s a crazy cool dancefloor, a super slick hubbly lounge, which occupies what used to be the old dancefloor, a bar, which can be accessed from each area, and an outdoor chill zone. The lineup of the event included DJs Green Jnr, Jonathan “Kingping” Fry, who celebrated his birthday on the decks, Dakin Auret, and Coco Loco. These little mix masters truly showed the crowd who was boss that night, as we all fell victim to their pleasureful poison.

For those who aren’t too keen to hoof flick, there’s the outside terrace area. This little place of hidden treasures, is the best spot to grab a drink, mingle with the minions, and relax under the night sky. Local celebs who frequent Durban, and enjoy Origin are often found chillaxing out there. This week, I was fortunate enough to have met and chatted with Mnet’s The Wild star, Tyrone Koegh, as well as a few of the Western Force players who played against The Sharks earlier that day.

And that was just the upstairs part. Although the LOKI event only took place on the top floor of the club, the rest of the levels are, and were for me that night, “must-visits”. The wood bar ranged from relaxed reggae beats, chilled dub, to some old school hip hop tunes. The “jungle room” is my personal favourite, with its crazy funky, tech-house and electro music, and the next level down, is the comfortably crowded, yet ever so popular engine room.

On a scale of 1 to “I can’t wait until the next one”, this event ranked about an 8 in my books. Having recently come out of a cast from a broken ankle, I was under strict doctors orders not to dance, which is funny, because the dancefloor was where I found myself for most of the night. Whether or not the LOKI boys are back in the rooftop very soon with their dangerously deep house beats, I’ll definitely be making my way back to Origin to flick my hooves like an impala, and go buck-wild.

About ten years ago the legends of Italian carbohydrates, Fatti’s and Moni’s, received the seething wrath of the conservative South African public. “You don’t have to keep an Italian to cook Italian” was a commercial fraught with controversy; as an elderly petit woman was placed inside a cupboard for a later stage; when the hankering for authentic meatballs took flight. It was hilarious, and everyone laughed, yet the carrot in the arse of a few anti-liberal “PG-13 is for Lucipher” types saw that the ad was taken off air. But why? I can just imagine the prudish zealots sitting on the couch, insisting on being so conservative they make Stalin look like a lipstick-wearing dolphin-rights-activist in a recyclable one piece, picking up the phone, and crying bigotry. But that’s what our post-Apartheid nation is all about: being as offended as possible by anyone slightly different than you, who creates humour over a supposed stereotype. If the creatives were tiny 70 year old Italian chicks, does it then make it ok? Why can’t we just laugh at the concept without reading deeper into the meaning? And now we have a modern example: Florence and the Machine. On Monday our Facebook page was frenzied over a pic we posted. Were we wrong? And does laughter trump social cohesion?

Understandably our country is still raw after years of separatist misrule. Im not going to dress as a Zulu princess and mumble my way through a mispronounced version of a Mandoza hit during a sheep sacrifice in the Transkei. Because I would get shot. And rightfully so. That’s disrespectful as it mocks one’s inherent culture and uniqueness. But there is a large difference between ridicule and just enjoying our various personalities in a variety of forms. The picture of Florence features a comically blank face, next to the tool of her trade; the washing machine. By saying that you are offended are you then demeaning the profession of domestic work that employs millions of South Africans to feed their families? Is this not a dignified profession? It’s fair and well to create a picture of a prostitute next to an armoured tank with the caption “Ho-Style work environment”, but god forbid we trample on the hallowed work of housekeeping.

But the real crux, the nuts and bolts, the true swollen testicle of the situation is that it is made by a white man, and white people can’t joke about anything to do with the black populace. As soon as any black stereotype is seen through a white man’s glasses it is racist. Who are we to poke fun at years of trauma? But does it really make a difference? I created my own picture (see below) playing on the shame of the white man: Beer drinking classless racist rednecks in their natural habitat: a bakkie Jacuzzi. Hands up offended white people? Its just a picture, a bit of fun, there’s no burning cross or KKK hooded delusionists screaming for white power.  Even if it was made by a black man, nobody would give a shit. Stop reading so deep into it and take it at face value. Do you look at a photo of a model and over analyse it? If you sat there thinking “she’s so skinny because her daddy never truly loved her and thus focuses so much on beauty in the never ending pursuit of perfection solely to impress her long lost father” – then you are taking all the joy out of life. You can always find negatives in an image. Sometimes it’s ok to just fucking smile and move on.

Imagine if everyone in this country stopped being so offended by every slight nuance that has to do with race. Such a large portion of conflict would disappear. Sometimes socially insecure people should honestly just take a few ecstasies. Everyone would hug, laugh, joke and chuckle all to the blissful sounds of the melodic Florence and the Machine. We would see the picture, smile at its double entendre and continue to enjoy each other’s warm multi-cultural embrace, while giving jobs to local Vicks and white glove manufacturers. It would remove the social insecurities that breed distain for humorous pics like these. Stop being so socially insecure and just enjoy life. But don’t insult Allah, that oke is like way beyond reproach, even if there is a pic of him with 60 virgins riding a magical carpet.

I hate to admit it but I’m one of those closet soapie watchers. It’s partly due to the fact that I didn’t have access to DSTV’s selection of satellite programming during the time that I was hustling on the streets- forcing me to find something entertaining to watch on the National Broadcaster each night. Isidingo is exactly that… entertaining.

There have even been days while getting coffee at work when I discussed how so many of us guys find the cougarish character, Cheryl inexplicably hot. This is one of those locally made soapies that doesn’t make you want to cry yourself to sleep at night after watching it and this is partly due to the fact that it remains relevant and topical (at the best of times).

I know the feeling...

This week the producers and writers at Isidingo decided to push the envelope that bit more by adding a lesbian plot twist to the storyline of the show’s premier mooiness, the character Charlie (played brilliantly by Jay Anstey- who we’ve been trying to convince to come in for an interview). The basic storyline is that the troubled youth and hotty of Horizon Deep has now developed a liking for girls as well as boys causing her to explore things with the tennis playing character of Suzie (played by Elsje Tielman). Of course, the prudish and gay hating portion of South Africa complained about this totally implausible storyline (because obviously there aren’t gay people in South Africa)-

So soon after I was forced to start an online campaign to have racist (formerly, apparently) model stripped of her title (Link HERE), I am deeply saddened that now it is the lesbians who have to bear the brunt of ignorance and general nastiness. I mean, seriously it’s not like they’re forcing you to watch Betty White and the Octomom lather each other up. At the risk of sounding like a 15 year old boy, this is possibly the best thing to happen on South African tv. Suzie is hot, so is Charlie- they have normal problems and are also just trying to find love and happiness like the rest of us.

Really… why can’t we all just lesbian love each other?!

When I eventually manage to get into bed and fall asleep, I sleep pretty hard. It is not by any stretch of the imagination like when the characters on soapies do it. When I wake up in the mornings I look like Courtney Love (because you know, she looks like a man). Anton Taylor is a good mate of the MyCityByNight crew and he has been synonymous with witty writing and educational “activities” that leave the world enlightened.

In the past we’ve had the opportunity to work with Anton on projects involving us drinking copious amounts and then being breathalysed all in the name of science (Check the link HERE). This time Anton returns with a rather spectacular mullet and attempt at explaining exactly what makes a bakkie good. It’s utterly ridiculous, but it did have me in tears…

The Jozi based trio, Shadowclub who have just won the title of “Best Rock” at the Annual MTN SA Music Awards this year-  will be the main act performing live on Saturday, May 19^th at Live-The Venue on 166 Mathews Meyiwa Road (former Stamfordhill Road) in Morningside.

Supporting local acts include, Southern Gypsy Queen who is known for their raw, edgy rock sound, three albums namely “Sweet Voodoo”, “Rise Up” and “Be the Lion” and presence at major music festivals including OppiKoppi, Splashy Fen, KKNK and OppiAarde; and The Cheap Bad Habits, a band from Durban who has played at Live-The Venue previously, with their rare blend of outlaw blues and classic high-voltage rock ‘n roll sound.

Tickets cost R60 per person and are available at the door on the night. Doors open at 20h00.

Dress like a hipster, you’ll probably be judged less.

Living in Durban, we’ve become used to the fact that we dont get many big international live acts visiting us, unlike the other cities in South Africa, that is why when productions such as JC LeRoux’s LeGood Life tour was announced, many ceased the opportunity to take full advantage of it. Yes the main acts being Goodluck and Pascal & Pearce may have been local but are well worthy of international status, such is the quality of the music they produce.

I first saw Goodluck live last year at the Hooters bikini contest, they had just broke into the local charts with their then hit single Hop on, hop off. The energy levels of the band were on another level, especially from their vocalist Juliet Harding. It is very cliche but she really is like the enegizer bunny, dancing, singing, getting the crowd going, she never stops! They term their style of music “electro swing” which is pretty appropriate with their sounds being very much from the “swing era” fused with modern beats.

Suncoast beach was the venue for the concert and what better place to have a concert in Durban than on the beach! As you all know, there is no such thing as winter on the east coast so most of the crowd rocked up in t-shirts and slops. I was fortunate enough to not have to wait in the long line for entrace as my name featured on the guestlist, which also granted me access to JC LeRoux VIP area. Having VIP access was very handy seeing we had our own bar…and a free tab (hell yeah!) not to mention the tasty snack platters that helped to kill the munchies.

After the thirsts were quenched it was time for Goodluck, Pascal & Pearce who were playing last were kind enough to introduce them to the crowd. Juliet looking stunning as ever got the crowd going as they opened up with “Hop on, hop off”. Song after the song, they just continued to wow the crowd and they there was even a surprise as Matthew Moolman made a guest appearance to perform “Takin’ it easy” with them. Matthew stayed on to perform an acoustic version of Hop on, hop off while Juliet took a short break, then they were back again to seal an impressive show. If I had to compare it to the performance I witnessed last year, I’d have to say the quality is still top notch but they’ve gotten even better. One would never have thought that this was their first proper concert. This was Goodluck’s last show on SA shores as they head over to Europe to show them what SA has to offer. I can only wish them all the best for the tour and Im sure they are going to astound crowds as they do here.

Wait…the show wasn’t over, as after Goodluck left the stage Pascal Ellinas and Dave Pearce better known as Pascal & Pearce came to tear shit up. Being a trance junkie and watching the likes of Miami and Ibiza get epic parties on the beach, it was about time Durbs got something similar. Better known for their remixes, they kicked off proceedings with a remix of one of Goodlucks tracks. I and pretty much most of you first heard of Pascal and Pearce with their single “Paper Skies” getting decent airplay on 5fm, they followed up with epic tracks featuring Louis Carver “Days go by” and their latest offering “Disco Sun” with vocals by Goodluck’s Juliet Harding. I’ve seen the likes of Markus Schulz, ATB, Tiesto, Deadmau5 and Cosmic Gate just to name a few play live and can honestly say these guys in terms of pure entertainment value rank just as high as those mentioned. Heck, I enjoyed their set more than I enjoyed Avicii’s who visited us not to long ago. They played all their hit singles as well as some of their other remixes including the Zedd Remix of Skrillex’s “Breakin a sweat” (highlight of my night). The concert ended at 11:30 which was a bit early than I expected but I’m sure some law is to blame for that. Over all the concert was a blast and just goes to show the quality of talent we have in SA. Go out and support these acts as they really are world class.

World famous tennis star Serena Williams has decided to give herself a break from running around the court chasing a ball to record a series of rap songs. Yes, even rapper The Game thinks Serena Williams could be the next big thing if she decides to drop an album.

The Game added that he wasn’t really that surprised, considering the tennis champ’s Compton roots.

“You shouldn’t expect her to come with anything less than the official rap bars,” then added “I can see her doing big things.”

This isnt normally the kind of thing that we cover on MyCityByNight but I figured that this was for a very worthwhile cause that needs all the help it can get. St Anne’s Homes – Cape Town’s oldest shelter for abused, pregnant and destitute women with young children is turning 108 years old.

They have organised a special celebratory fund-raising evening with Alan Committie and Robery Fridjhon’s comedy, Funny Business! at Theatre on the Bay on 15 May 2012.

Tickets are between R90-R130 and will be going towards the valiant efforts of St. Annes Homes. Show starts at 20h00 and free snacks and wine will be served from 19h00.

This video is a portrait of township musician, DJ/Producer Mazic Kondile, from Cape Town’s informal settlement, Du Noon. Berlin videographer, Christian McCallum , originally from Cape Town, met Mazic over a year ago and made a video for his track ‘Visions of 2′. A year later the two linked up with the Red Bull Studio Cape Town team to help Mazic complete the jiving, Mzansi House banger, ‘Loh’.

The video details the three days it took to take the music out of Mazic’s township bedroom studio into the Red Bull Studio where it was mixed down and mastered to be on par with other proffesional SA House tracks. Take a look at the video and once you’re done take a listen to the final track (and download if you like) to see and hear why Mazic is an example of the kind of musical talent hidden in and across South Africa’s landscape.
