When we heard that Snoop Lion was on his way to South Africa we immediately put on our “OG” playlist and started screaming things like “drop it like it’s hot” and “smoke weed every day” in the MyCityByNight HQ – you should have been there… it was rad. Our excitement aside, there were tons of you that were also as amped to see the reincarnated star live in the most beautiful country on Earth.

In the bit leading up to the Cape Town concert (we’re based in this tasty city, just in case you didn’t already know) there had been some reports of less than full concert arenas at the previous shows, which had us stressing that one of the most respected artists in the World would have to perform to an empty house, given that it was a Tuesday night and all. Luckily, we had nothing to worry about as Cape Town rallied their forces to give Snoop Lion a crowd worthy of someone who had outlived many of the hip hop greats like Tupac and Nate Dogg.

I’ve had the privilege of seeing Snoop Dogg live a few times and if I had to be honest, I was a little worried that his reincarnation as Snoop Lion would have a serious effect on how much love he was going to get from crowds that hadn’t necessarily had that much exposure to his new music and album (which includes a Miley Cyrus duet). Thankfully, Snoop gave the Cape Town audience the opportunity to hear a musical journey of an artist that has spanned over 20 years and counting… it was magical. It is a pretty big deal to re-invent yourself, ala Kylie Minogue or Madonna but to completely change up your lifestyle and a formula that has brought you so much success over the years without losing a large portion of your fans is really something else. The guy was as cool as you would think we would be and knows just how to tell a story through rap, while making sure everyone there has a good time. Apart from covering a couple of his newer tracks he sang every song that I could’ve hoped to hear, Gin n Juice, Aint nothing but a G thang and even did Gangster Party with the verse of legendary deceased rapper Tupac, which literally had the crowd frothing as Snoop dropped the Westside sign and crip walked all the way across the stage.

Mention also has to be made of the supporting act for the night, Jack Parow who properly ripped up the Grand Arena with his live band. The dude who was refused entry to Grand West because of a ridiculous outfit (and probably smelling like a case of brandy) was now performing live on stage just a few years later much to his own enjoyment, which showed through the energetic set that he delivered to the Cape Town crowd. Jack Parow rocked the crowd with an x-rated performance (not saying this because of the band drummer who was only wearing a bikini during the whole set) and showed why he is one of the biggest local talents in South Africa right now. Jack has the type of mouth that a mother would love to wash out with soap – I don’t think I’ve ever heard the word POESE in one concert that much, it was the best! He even did one track that he wrote with South African music legend David Kramer (who according to Jack is “poes cool”) where he uses a harmonica inbetween verses, providing evidence that he’s grown into much more than a flash in the pan Afrikaans musician. Respect.

Having a concert like this inside a casino was always going to be an interesting choice. It always adds a nice brand of apartheid style terror when the entire venue is being patrolled by sniffer-dogs and undercover security and cops. However, there were still tons of people who were arrested and detained for blazing the whacky tabaccy in and around Grand West, now that’s dedication. Now, I’m not saying it’s ok to smoke weed (actually I am) but it would’ve been nice to have the concert somewhere slightly more accepting of Rastafarian behaviours. Aside from that, I had the best time getting to see a legend like Snoop perform in my own backyard on a Tuesday night (like we were in Vegas or something).

G&G has always been a strong contributer to the local entertainment industry and have now started becoming more of a force with events like this and the upcoming Sensation party. I hope for more of the same from these guys… the industry sure needs a breath of fresh air.

This is one of those moments that is going to make you feel one of two things – really sorry for Alex Song or completely overjoyed that Puyol could ice someone so easily. After moving to Barcelona from Arsenal Alex Song has been forced to play a bit-part role in one of the best teams in the World. Things went from ok to terrible for the midfielder when Carlos Puyol iced him when he attempted to raise the 2013 La Liga trophy that Barca had just won.

The trophy was given to the team captain Carlos Puyol after which he went looking for a team mate to help him lift the trophy, a deserving team mate like say Eric Abidal, who had, had a liver transplant earlier that season, still managing to play for the Spanish champions after that. Unfortunately for Song, for some bizarre reason he thought that Puyol was pointing him to help lift the trophy instead of Abidal, who was next to him and got his dream shattered as he was pushed aside by Puyol after stepping forward. Ecstasy to agony within a matter of seconds… Shame.

MCBN: The question that has everyone asking, how did Lab start all those 8 years ago? We immediately think back to the Wreck & Fuel days, things have grown since then, haven’t they?

The good ol’ days! Yeah, Wreck & FUEL – the original bad boys The scene was completely different … very underground, very niche… but the inspiration for LAB came from a passion and a love for the music, the sub-culture, and the people! The idea was to bring friends and like-minded psy-lovers together to party to the best psytrance music and DJ’s each and every week. LAB has just grown bigger over the years – but the original passion hasn’t changed!

MCBN: What type of sound can we expect from a Labyrinth party?

Our music policy, since the very first party 8 years ago, has been to showcases only the best in psychedelic music – ranging from minimal techno, through to groovy progressive, right through to slamming full-on Psy. A night at LAB is always about a journey – the Dj’s and the music reflects this.

MCBN: At which venue did Labyrinth premiere, and where has it found its permanent home??

LAB started at Opium, using a secret entrance that no one knew about! We were there for 2 years, after which we moved to The Bang Bang Club for a month, before settling at Fiction for over a year. After that, we were at Rhino Room for a short while, and then after a few one-off events at various venues and locations, we have settled at Trinity for the past 2-3 years – its been quite a ride!

MCBN: Can you name some international acts who have graced the Cape Town decks throughout the 8 years of Lab?

D-Nox, Eskimo, Abomination, Skazi, Atomic Pulse, Taka, Shane Gobi, Pogo, Paul Taylor… plus a few others I’m sure I’m forgetting …

MCBN: What can we expect from the Labyrinth brand in the future? Continue the indoor madness or could we expect an outdoor anytime soon?

Our mantra has recently become “bringing the outdoors indoors”! We look to expose new people to the psy-trance music and culture that we love so much! Whether we do this through indoor or outdoor events doesn’t matter to us – its about the experience, the quality, and about having a good time, and we have proven we can do this in ANY environment! For now – we’ll keep to the indoor scene for this winter… but who knows… an outdoor is certainly on the horizon

MCBN: What would your ideal line-up be, internationals or locals & who?

To be honest – my ideal LAB line-up would be the acts and DJ’s that we do already book! Our “locals” make up some of the world’s most in demand “intertnationals” … guys like Broken Toy, The Commercial Hippies, Headroom, Shift, Deleriant (to name a few), are all Cape Town based yet spend more time touring overseas than otherwise! Obviously I have some fav’s from overseas too … but the biggest and best parties we have ever had have always been when it’s an all local line-up, our guys know the crowd & give them exactly what they want! … Cape Town psy kicks-ass, period!

MCBN: What are your thoughts on the future of indoor psychedelic parties? Will they keep evolving or could we see a new type of party, cross genre so to speak, that is happening in Cape Town?

Cross genre has always been our definig factor; in fact we were one of the first brands to have 2 dancefloors, one of the first to bring in the proggresive sound (8 years ago) and one of the first to bring in the techno sound (Killer Robot actually hosted our second floor at our 2^nd birthday).

Currently there are loads of competitors and many more immitators in the scene, but at the end of the day, versatility and evolution are key. So long as the quality never faulters, the brand will survive.

The future is exciting! More and more organisers are throwing events, which gives the public more choice as to what they can attend. LAB has always been a pioneer when it comes to indoor events, we are the longest running after all

MCBN: Ricky Bynight has just started his DJing career. How would he go about getting a set at Lab? Do you guys choose DJ’s on merit, if they’re currently doing a good job in the scene? How does it work?

Ricky!! When ravers become DJ’s – haha Just kidding!

For anyone interested in playing at our events, firstly – come to our parties, and show your support of what we do. Secondly – do your homework (make mix tapes / demo CD’s / soundcloud / mixcloud profiles). Thirdly – build a following (grow your fan-base & market yourself), and finally practice practice practice – good mixing and an understanding of your place on a line up are essential skills in this industry (and two things we really look for in a artist).

To be honest, it was easier to host new talent at LAB when we ran weekly parties, as there was more opportunity to vary the line-ups, and host a greater number of guest DJ’s. Now with only 3 events this season, we are limited by the number of acts we can host each night, so look to provide only the highest quality music and line-ups that we can!

Having said that, LAB was built on the back of up-and-coming DJ’s (APM who started out with us at the begininng & has since grown into the mega brand HEADROOM), so we are always open to new acts, and encourage people to send us their music and demos all the time!

MCBN: Can we expect any international acts this winter?

YES! We have them playing ALL the time (they just happen to be based in Cape Town) – haha! As I have said we do prefer a purely local line up, our guys really are some of the worlds best – why wouldn’t we?

For me personally; its not a question of booking some no-name “overseas” DJ to prove that we have a good line-up, if we bring someone from another country it will be because they have serious pedigree & something unique to add to our event.

Take our birthday for example; we have Broken Toy & The Commercial Hippies, both doing live sets. These acts have released numerous albums worldwide, and toured EVERYWHERE! Gokon Rave have released with Spin Twist, Danalog with Perfect Stranger’s label Digital Structures, and I have released with Iboga & Plastik Park along the way too!

So to answer your question; internationals are not off the cards BUT for now our crew are doing just fine

Haha. Hehe. It’s comedy time in Cape Town with the brand new dinner and a show offering from Headquarters (HQ). On Wednesday 05 June 2013 the sophisticated urban hotspot will host a night of good food, good spirits and laughter.

The night is hosted by local funny guy, Paul Snodgrass and during the course of the night and weeks to follow, he’ll be joined by a series of comedians who are at the top of their laughter-inducing games.The night will be much like a stand up night of old with the entertainment taking placing in the bar area, which is adorned with exposed heritage brick walls, moody lighting, and leather seating (how very Cape Tonian of you). Cocktails, wine and premium spirits will be on offer, paired with new and delicious tapas from the bar menu.

If you really want to make a night out of it, you just HAVE to book a table for dinner beforehand and try HQ’s award-winning sirloin steak that comes served simply with their signature Café de Paris butter, thinly cut fries and a classic salad to start.

If you haven’t been living in a South African mine, you would have by now heard about the devastating tornado that tore it’s way through the aptly named Tornado alley, pretty much leveling a large part of Oklahoma.

Normally this type of news is really upsetting with it scoring fairly low on the daily smile-o-meter, but every now and again there’s a story that makes the news, which just makes you believe that everything is going to be OK, albeit for just a moment.

The granny in this interview is Barbara Garcia and while being interviewed in front of what used to be her house, something really magical happened. Barbara told the reporter:

I was sitting on the stool holding my dog. This was the game plan all through the years, to go in that little bathroom (together). I rolled around a little bit and when it stopped I was right there (and) that stove cooker is what I saw. I never lost consciousness and I hollered for my little dog and he didn’t answer, he didn’t come, so I know he’s in here somewhere.

As she was in the process of telling her very sad story someone spotted a dog’s head in the house’s rubble, pointing it out to Barbara. What followed was a fairly emotional reunion between Barbara and her pup on live tv. *GUSH*

In the latest teaser video from Sony you can see exactly what the upcoming Playstation 4 is going to look like. Ok, not really. This video is pretty much aimed at getting virtually every game-console-loving soul on the planet rather excited for the launch of the heavily spec’d PS4 on June 10 2013.

The console has been designed with a strong focus towards sharing of gaming achievements and the absolute control of your tv as an all-round media device, yet nobody is quite sure how it’s going to look just yet. However, given the nature of this industry, it might be advisable to wait a bit before running out to purchase one, given the standard teething process that is part and parcel of game console development.

I really hope our South African internet gets a whole lot cheaper and faster by then…

We’ve always been massive Goldfish fans and it’s more often than not that you’ll hear their sounds booming out of the MyCityByNight HQ as we crank out the latest in entertainment news. Just yesterday, I saw the music video for one of my favourite (and newest) tune from the boys at Goldfish – Take Back Tomorrow.

The video features the boys being awesome and fans lapping up their greatness at events around the South African landscape. It really does make me very proud to hear tunage of the this quality coming out of SA – it really isn’t going to be before all of our local talent starts to dominating Global charts.

On May the 4th 2013 a diverse group of just under 2500 South Africans gathered in Cape Town to display their solidarity and unity with the Global Cannabis Culture. Participants in the march united to discuss, promote and educate both consumers and non-consumers about South Africa cannabis culture as well as celebrating and embracing cannabis culture as a personal lifestyle choice.

The march also provided the perfect platform for South Africans to show their support for the re-legalisation of the Cannabis plant.

Last night while I was watching the Billboard Awards I was gifted with this little bit of social media gold. While performing Adorn, R&B singing sensation Miguel decided that it would be a good idea to leap over the crowd to get to the catwalk runway (presumably for dramatic effect). The only problem with this was that he miscalculated, ending up drop kicking the crap out of a fan in “the pit”.

It was a drop kick that even Hulk Hogan would have been proud of, just a shame that it had to be a fan on the receiving end and not Miguel himself. The fans he skopped were later seen being interviewed while kicking it (see what I did there?) with Miguel backstage holding ice-packs. Nice.

This being the internet, someone has already created a meme that features commentary from WWE announcer Jim Ross that is more than hilarious (in tears here).

I woke up Saturday morning at about 9am, dreading the climb out of my comfortable, triple duvet slumber. Before passing out the previous night, I chugged down an elixir of corenza c, med lemon, disprin and myprodol. Before rolling out of bed I updated my status to: “I’ve never before been so tempted to bail on a party”, continued to stew in an air of sickness and depression, before being bombarded by many a comment urging me to man up and go through, so once again before finally rousing my sleepy ass I updated my status yet again: “I’ve never been so amped for a party while drinking corenza c”. I was up, feeling super groggy and medicated but I was ready to attack yet another Organik: Love Project party.

Being the second Love Project for me and the second one where I was on a budget, I was ready to see just how loving I could become!  After a long wait I was eventually collected by my good friend  Sean and after a few more admin issues we were off in his faithful “Scout” – his trusty bakkie.

We arrived at the pristine venue just as darkness was beckoning and as the mercury began to drop. Quickly loading up on some alcoholic beverages, we eventually ventured to the dance floor.

The Streisand Brothers were up on stage delivering some chilled progressive vibes and preparing an alarmingly large Saturday night crowd for a great, yet cold night of stomping.

Saturday night was especially awesome for me as I find myself falling head over heels for psytrance that falls into the more bouncy category, as if Sterealkey (Whom I missed :/)and Streisand Brothers weren’t enough, the powers that be blessed us by giving us a set delivered by those Equinox boys – Stereotype. These two, as always upped the ante, furiously throwing the tempo up and having a blast doing so! Always a pleasure to jam to a Stereotype set, even more so at an outdoor and even more so on the Saturday night!

The progressive flowed into the beautiful transition that is “Nano Tech” next with one of my favourite producers on the label – Static Flow. Friendly enough for day time and aggressive enough for night, this was the perfect set to behold following a slew of progressive thumpers. Brett knows how to make a crowd go full throttle, with his blend of machine(robotic) like, almost “industrial” night time full on.

Just when I thought things couldn’t get any better, it was time for the only DJane at the party to take the podium and who better than the beautifully energetic Tune Raider. As usual her selection of beats took the party to the next phase, preparing everyone for the harder sets that awaited us. As always Pamm rocked it as if it were her first or last gig, giving at times more energy whilst jamming on stage than some of us on the floor!

Things started getting messy when they allowed those sexy hooligans David and Mike- aka Plusminus to play a 2:30am till 4:00am set. They were clearly frothing for a set at this time, as they really brought the ferocity along with them, setting the dance floor off with their chaotic choice of laser psy. Another commendation for stage presence to these two , even when the bar was closed and they had no more booze, these two rocked it like the two rockstar DJs they have become.

It was during their set that I started feeling the weariness of my cold,  as well as the near freezing temperatures outside so I decided to take a well deserved nap. Drunk, cold and suffering from a cold I was ready to rest my sexy loins.  I passed out with my mate Dan Wulfsohn and we struggled to get real rest, trading heart to heart stories about women in our past, being disturbed by mates who wanted to make drinks and girls who wanted our attention not to mention the cold – despite us being in a two man tent the air was freezing and sleeping was a challenge in its own. I meant to wake up for psyguy’s set at 7am but ended up only rising from my slumber to the bangers that Xerox was flinging into the crowd! The international act playing under his Xerox alias played a two hour set that seemed to last only thirty minutes and that’s because I found myself losing my shit during his set!

When I opened my eyes again, everyone was clapping as Headroom greeted the international artist and took the stage to do what his does best. Headroom for lack of a better review, got on stage and as per usual proceeded to treat everyone to yet another amazing Sunday set. Not much more can be said than – this guy is and will always be a crowd favourite for years to come! Keep it up, keep representing South Africa as well as you do!

That wizard who is never late nor early – he arrives precisely when he means to, to his spin wizardry forth upon us faithful servants of psytrance- this being a DJ who I believe should get way more slots than he does, this being Gandalf was up next and he followed in perfectly after Headroom, bringing with him the best kind of daytime psytrance slammers! I take my wizard hat off to this guy once again as he proved to us yet again why he is one of the veterans in this world we cherish so much.

The moment so many of us were waiting for all party was next and that was as Vertical Mode took to the stage. Many will agree with me when I say that his set was everything we expected and more!  No complaints here, except for that moment when his set ended! I can cross this experience of my list: “Saw Vertical Mode and lost my shit in the sun during a great Sunday service!” .  Missioning around the dance floor during his set kept me entertained throughout, it seems the beats this master was sending forth brought an extra sense of silliness to the patrons on the dance floor! So many smiling faces, silly dancers, friends of mine tackling each other with force and love, people jamming in hammocks and many a random laugh or conversation was shared! The amount of bliss caressing my body and that of everyone else’s was palpable. My body was being tickled with euphoria just from being around all this love!

And it continued as another legend of our universe took his part up in the pulpit, Mr Dave Mac Mckinley was tasked with the massive mission of ending the party after Vertical Mode was done tickling our senses.  Yet another DJ who should be playing more parties, this legend took the stage and delivered a beautiful ending sermon to yet another heart wrenchingly beautiful Sunday Funday! It was no surprise that when he ended, the crowd found themselves screaming in unison for one more track, and he did exactly that, giving us not one but I think it was three more tracks? I stand to be corrected as by this point I was pretty fucked!

Once the music did end, people stuck around and chilled on the dance floor, trading many a story and laugh as we successfully conquered yet another glorious party! We made our way to the parking lot where many groups of party animals were having mini car after parties, and before leaving a bunch of us, some random and some friends, helped a guy push his car, not once but eight times before it started again. To me this was a perfect image of how beautiful and considerate most of us are in this beautiful world we are a part of! Even though I was in the bakkie on my out when the others had pushed for the final time starting Jan’s bucket of bolts up again!

A huge thank you goes out to everyone involved, Warren keep it up bro, thank you to Mr Tromp for his amazing sound, Choppa and his crew for the rigging and beautiful decor, the lighting and visual team, the cleaners, the stall owners, the bar staff and of course to every beautiful smiling face on the dance floor. After the series kicked off in style with a performance from talented musician and songwriter Zaki Ibrahim, Boogie Boutique is back with another exciting party. For the un-initiated “Boogie Boutique” is a series of events taking place at the Bree Street Studios in Cape Town featuring an array of exciting artists on every last Saturday of the month.

This time around Christian Tiger School, the psychedelic/dream hip-hop duo from Cape Town, South Africa, comprising of Luc Veermeer and Sebastian Zanasi are going to be rocking the Cape of Good Dope with their awesome sounds. Both being A.D.D sufferers, their music wriggles around going from heavily filtered psychedelic synths to airy and playful melodies. Supporting these two very, very talented blokes will be the likes of resident DJ’s: Ruthy Pearl, White Nite, Cudi and P_Kuttah.

As part of the experience Boogie Boutique they will be hosting an art installation inspired by Hip Hop and Soul. Local artists have been commissioned to produce once-off pieces for the event on some rather unique canvasses. If you are a lover of good music and art, this is the place for you to be every month.

YOUSEF (UK) 

The new decade sees Yousef consolidating his status as an international DJ, Producer, Club Promoter and Music aficionado with ever greater impact. Running one of Europe’s premier clubnights co-exists alongside manning a record label of the same name, whilst his reputation as a DJ grows with increasing stature and a constantly escalating global calendar.

His productions continue to leave an indelible imprint on the world; the release of second artist album ‘Indigo Child’, the follow-up to 2009’s impressive LP ‘A Collection of scars and situations’, is scheduled for later on in 2011. A hugely expansive collection much like its predecessor, it marks a return to Circus Recordings after Yousef took a twelve month sabbatical to work exclusively with a select band of record labels, including Saved, Cocoon, Harthouse, and Monique Musique.

The return will be kick-started with the release of one 8 track EPs entitled ‘Yousef’s Circus Reworks’. The focus is simple; transformations of several productions with the Circus dancefloor specifically in mind, Jamie T, Fourtet, Giles Peterson, Moby and Sven Vath among the producers contributing material for Yousef to re-jig alongside his own peerless ‘Come Home’. Each track represents a certain time of the night or certain room; painting a personal musical projection of what Circus means to Yousef and an ideological snapshot of the clubnight’s musical DNA.

The event is quite the beast. Now in its ninth year, it’s quickly moved from being the best night in Liverpool to one of the most talked about and well respected soirees on the continent, the flagship for the refurbished and Funktion One equipped Masque. The high profile nature has seen shows with Planet E, Bedrock, Meganite and Teutonic techno institution Cocoon, not to mention a superlative collaboration with the BBC for the 500th Essential Mix.

Loco dice, Pete Tong Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Ricardo Vilalobos, Laurent Garnier, Luciano, Carl Craig, Adam Beyer, John Digweed, Davide Squillace, Raresh, Dennis Ferrer, Heidi, Nic Fanciulli, Tim Green and countless others have all played for Yousef and his party in the last 12 months. Many more are slanted for future shows in 2011 and beyond as it nears an unprecedented ten years of rave carnage.

And Yousef continues to push further ground as a DJ. 2011 will see his second year as one of the residents at Carl Cox presents… at Space, arguably the internationally renowned nightclub’s finest party of the season. A recent tour of South America saw a consolidation of his status as one of the premier foreign DJs for the continent (a debut at Warung Beach a particular highlight), and he remains a huge draw from the sun kissed shores of Melbourne to Miami to the sweat soaked basements of Manchester and Munich.

One thing’s for sure; Yousef will continue to leave a huge personal footprint upon electronic music both behind the scenes and behind the decks of the world’s finest clubs, whilst creating the musical soundtracks that pulsate through their clubber’s ears. He simply knows no other way.

Yes, my week has been made!!! After a Mario Balotelli goal helped secure a Champions League spot for the 7 seven time European champions, AC Milan last night news of his joy spread to micro-blogging platform Twitter through an official Mario Balotelli account. The World then realised that the account that had been tweeting since last week was actually run by the man himself, causing Twitter to break from all the people instantly following Mario’s tweets. There have been a couple of really funny parody accounts that have garnished zillions of followers with their tweets of the life of the football star, as most of us would imagine it to be (filled with crazy rants and home-fires). Now we get to see what he’s actually like… I’m hoping for some more Joey Barton-style honesty here.

Mario Balotelli is one of my favourite footballers just because of the fact that he’s completely nuts and clearly I’m not the only one who think so judging by the huge amount of followers he’s already racked up.

Sometimes the videos we put are totally stupid and feature naked rushing guys getting tasered at a festivals but this time around the video we’ve got our hands on is genuinely awesome. Normally when a deer gets nailed by a bus the deer would probably just explode into a zillion pieces, not this little guy though. The video shows footage from inside a bus as a deer gets hit by the bus and then continues to prance around the inside of the bus, hanging around for a ride.

The strangest thing has to be the fact that the driver doesn’t really consider this to be a big deal, continuing driving like nothing happened as the deer flies through the windscreen and spazzes out in the bus before accepting things, chilling out and walking around – that and the fact that one of the passengers pulls her bag closer to her, like the deer was going to steal it from her or something…

Today’s mix is one of those one’s that pretty much polarizes audiences – either Electro/Dutch House is something you absolutely love or loathe more than anything. It’s a big sound that has been destroying dancefloors across Europe for a good while and this mix is one that we played LOUD in the MCBN HQ.

The mix comes from Matthew ‘GiNjA’ Deacon, who got involved in DJing when he and some of his mates hosted the first dubstep club event in the Northern suburbs in early 2010 at Café V, Edward Street. However, as we all know, dubstep is the Devil’s music meaning that not very many clubs were too keen on hearing him play, so he started playing at commercial venues, such as Stones Durbanville and Edward Street to keep in the game. Since then he has had multiple mixes played on Assembly Radio, Zone Radio and this past weekend an Ultimix on 5FM as well as playing at The Assembly, Springboks Stellenbosch and Carnival Courts, Long Street. The music genre that he’s settled on is best described as a mix of electro and dutch house, while he enjoys switching it up and throwing elements of dubstep, hardstyle, moobahton, progressive, trance and even deep house into his sets.

While most people would celebrate their 40th birthday with a landmark party, John Vlismas will be doing the two things he loves best – talking dirty, and making people laugh.

The short but sharp troublemaker, who describes himself as “the thinking woman’s scumbag” says that “40″ will be his most audacious show to date:

“I’ve always wondered what it would be like to hit 40 – I must say, I’m almost there, and I’m still chewing my own food, I get wood on demand, I don’t get out of breath when I use stairs, and Steve Hofmeyr still hates me, so the signs are that everything is as it should be…”

Having become well-known for his part in staging some of the best comedy productions in South Africa over the past 15 years, including the SA Comic’s Choice Awards™ and Mass Hysteria, Vlismas says hewill be working extra hard on the design of this production to make sure that there are plenty of creative surprises for the audience, as well as a whole bunch of new material, including his most outrageous and thought-provoking yet – while he is loathe to divulge too much, he says that there may be nudity, live music and albinos – sounds like our kinda night out. Rhinos may come in for a lambasting, as will people in wheelchairs, the illiterate, the rich, tourists, rugby fans and people who march.

Beat Service will be performing a minimum 2HR set on the night being allowed to go on and tear shit up, should he be really into it.

One of the key focuses at HALO HQ is the promotion and inclusion of local supporting and emerging performers in their production. In light of this, they have teamed up with the awesome crew at SAtrancefamily.com. to bring you the SAfrancefamily Select Floor.

This floor will feature not one, but FIVE available guest performing slots, made possible by the ‘SAtrancefamily Select’ DJ Competition which kicked off on Monday 13 May 2013, with the final line-up being announced on Monday 27 May 2013.

As detailed on the SAtrancefamily.com website from the start of the competition, entrants will be afforded the opportunity to submit a 30 minute promotional mix, specific to the available slot they would like to play, of which the best for each slot will be selected by HALO HQ and SAtrancefamily representatives. This is the biggest collective opportunity ever offered to emerging artists to perform at the same showcase as an international DJ and Producer to date in Cape Town.
