David Beckham gives Lego an unexpected lift

David Beckham is one of the greatest footballers to grace the sport, few would doubt that. But his fame extends to so far beyond the pitch that you wouldn’t need to watch football to recognise that face or that little mosquito buzz that is his voice. David, together with Victoria, have become lucrative spokespeople who are sought after by basically any product that needs airtime.

Within three days of arriving in the US when he was signed by LA Galaxy, Victoria was on the Tonight show with Jay Leno and was signed to do a TV show on NBC, and there was a welcoming party which was attended by the likes of Steven Spielberg, George Clooney, Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and Will Smith. Not bad there, Posh and Becks. But can you beat Simphiwe Tshabalala buying me a beer on the jol on my birthday. What? You can’t? Oh, well…… that didn’t happen.

The Beckhams are one steam-roller of a brand machine. Every product that Posh and Becks touches turns to bona fide gold. If there ever was a good example of this, it is the explosion of sales Lego experienced after he gave them some unexpected airtime.

Mind you, this has nothing to do with the Lego models that they made in honour of the Beckhams for their 30th anniversary way back in 2008 (which is the picture above. Note how Victoria’s knockers look like they have the moon wedged in between them….). According to an article published by Sky, David Beckham confessed in a television interview that he spends his spare time in Italy constructing a replica of the Taj Mahal, and since that comment was made, sales of the Lego set (which has 5 922 pieces) skyrocketed by 663%.

And that happened…. in one day.

Imagine that: One morning you’re sitting on a stockpile of models of some Indian heritage site in your store in some corner of England, and then….. they’re all gone bin a flash and you have a fat wad of cash in your back pocket. Fan-f-f-f-fucking-tastic!

Lego aren’t going to jump off this gravy train just yet. The company has now invited good old Dave to propose any ideas he has for future kits. “We would definitely love to hear if David Beckham has any ideas,” said a Lego spokesperson, “The very nature of Lego is that we encourage all our customers to get back to us with ideas and suggestions.”

They have even invited the Beckhams to their headquarters in Denmark (MCBN fact for the day: Lego was created by Danes. you guys didn’t know we educate as well as preach the jol-factor, did you?).

That’s a shameless effort to stay on the bandwagon. But who’s going rinse Lego about that? I think it’s about time we take Kreg to London, get him smashed at some schmoozy celebrity do, and see if he can get some MCBN airtime off old Becks. Then we are scha-weeeeet! But let that be our secret for now, we won’t tell him till we get there.

Let’s just hope he doesn’t try lunging Old Dave’s wife. That would just be awkward.
