Without a change in consumer culture I will be harassed by Nonhle’s unbelievably narcissistic ramblings through retweets, wall posts and hair relaxer adverts for years to come. MyCityByNight would like to start that change…

Let’s talk briefly about the rather outspoken tv presenter and entrepreneur Nonhle Thema. She’s got just over 106 000 followers on Twitter- many of whom are fascinated by the self-involved utter nonsense that she squeezes into 140 characters. If you for one minute question whether she really thinks she’s as awesome as God, she’ll lay into you, letting you know how much cash she’s made vs how little you’ve got. She’s had more feuds than Cher has gay fans and is never far from letting you know just how great she is.

In a recent Time Out interview, Nonhle gave a little bit of insight around how her behaviour on social media platforms will be used to better her career instead of bashing other “broke bitches”:

“I have now decided that my Twitter space will not carry random, not carefully thought-out, tweets in 2012. I am going to use the space to inspire and encourage the youth to be also entrepreneurial and become a success,”

She then went on to chat about her haters (not a cliché at all):

“This whole pull down syndrome comes from the generally held perception that as a young black person you cannot be successful in business, and therefore cannot be your own person.

“The fact is you can, and everything that I do in life is geared towards correcting that perception.”

I can guarantee one thing… All of the hating has got nothing to do with the fact that you are black and young, dear.

Annoyed by the fact that Nonhle continues assault us with useless crap that only die-hard fans will consume (Nonhle Thema Hair, Nonhle Thema Precious Ivy Perfume & a hip hop tune produced by Bongani Fassie), I decided that it was time to do something. Writing and saying things that poke fun at her is just getting a little bit old.

MyCityByNight affects the lives of thousands of people a day, with many of those people being forced to hear about Nonthle Thema far more often than they’d like (social media is a bitch like that). The thinking is that if we can make sure never to mention her again, it’ll be one less place that you, in turn, will have to hear about… wait what’s her name again?

So that’s the proposition. If this post gets 100 likes, MyCityByNight will NEVER mention Nonhle Thema’s name again. Anywhere.

In the past I’ve been quite vocal about Die Antwoord as a band and have been met with death threats from their less than sane fans. A story surfaced a few days ago that Zef rappers Die Antwoord have approached Celine Dion for a collaboration.

Ninja had this to say-

“We want to work with her more than anybody. I’m going to keep saying it in interviews because I want it to happen so badly,” .

Yolandi Visser (or Vi$$er as she likes it spelt) then went on to add-

“We need this to happen. No word yet from Celine’s camp on whether she’d be up for the offer but we’re not holding our breath,”

Celine Dion’s representatives have not yet responded…

Am I the only one who thinks this is just another sad attempt to garner some more attention from media and fans after they’ve been less than easy to deal with now that they’re famous overseas? I’m really over the fad- lets hear some real music.

I have always had a soft spot for the Resident Evil games series, complete with terrifying plots and enough gore and gameplay to keep anyone busy. This week Capcom®, a leadingworldwide developer and publisher of video games, confirmed that Resident Evil™ 6 is in full development and scheduled for release on the Xbox 360® and PlayStation®3 on November 20, 2012 with a Windows PC version to follow.

Blending zombies and survival horror, this latest instalment in the multi-million selling franchise, is reportedly the most ambitious and immersive title of the series to date. It has been ten years since the Raccoon City incident (where the first game happened) and the President of the United States has decided to reveal the truth behind what took place in the belief that it will help save the world from the bioterrorist threat. After this some serious shit goes down that leaves the President infected and ready to chomp on the nearest staff member. Enter personal friend and Raccoon City survivor, Leon S. Kennedy who needs to now murderise his mate thereby killing the President. At the same time, Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance member, Chris Redfield arrives in China, itself under threat of a bioterrorist attack.  With no country safe from these attacks and the ensuing outbreaks, the entire world’s population is united by a common fear that there is no hope left. Yup, this one is going to be well scary.

Resident Evil 6 sees series favourites Leon and Chris come together to face this unprecedented threat. They are joined with a host of new characters, each with their own unique perspective and involvement in the overall story.

Hiroyuki Kobayashi, Resident Evil 6’s Executive Producer said:

“From the outset the team’s intention was to create an experience that delivers a gripping storyline, tense single-player and co-op action all set against a constant theme of horror. We are calling this fusion dramatic horror and are confident it will resonate with both existing fans of the series as well as newcomers.”

Its funny how my idea of “mob justice” has been morphed, prodded and influenced by Francis Ford Coppola movies. I envision a Southern Italian with an ironic flower nickname like Bobby “the daffodil” Puccini giving concrete swimming shoes to a police informant, and then celebrating with a bowl of Spaghetti Napolitano. But this stereotype has been molested by the Hollywood guild and a South African context bears little, if any, semblance. Thabo “The Eastern Cape Protea” Mandonsela hardly wields the unrequited fear that his Sicilian counterpart is so well renowned. Yet the local Saffas have power in numbers, and quite strangely; social responsibility. Now I must preface my words with the standard “I, in no way, condone violence in any form”, but a community backhanding a cell phone thief does get my highly esteemed golden star. Its no secret that the SAPS has failed your average South African. Im not talking about the white Bishopscourt housewives receiving foot rubs from their ADT guards, Im talking about the working class general citizens who live in shanty town squalor and whose New South Africa world resembles a lawless wasteland. Its in these townships of desperation, where the law is as effective as a condom in a Kardashian household, that the community is police, judge, jury and executioner, and a rather heavy handed hangman at that! Is it a legitimate way to drown the flames of anarchy?

Basically the idea centers on a notion that due to limp-dicked policeman, a town leader will drag the accused into a communal setting. Charges are catapulted from all corners and eventually the “mob” decries a guilty verdict. This is followed by beatings, stonings and, according to Captain Malcom Pojie of Plettenberg Bay police station; “group discipline”. However in the case of Derrick Shwati, a cluster of 2000 protestors swarmed the poor oke, and the bottom-end of Plett’s warped socio-economic disparity, got their freak on. “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” But if youre the seventh dude hurling rocks at an accused child rapist then youre in an ethical grey area. This is where my main problem lies. Poor Mr Shwati had more black guys on top of him then Lohan at the ass end of a crack binge, and just like Lindsay Id be surprised if a third of them even knew his name. When adrenalin is pumping and everyone is riding the bandwagon like it’s a Porsche Boxter, people don’t care if he’s guilty, what his crime is or if the law has taken its course. “This dudes getting moered with stones… and I love a good ‘moering’.” There’s no fair trial, no thought of the consequences, its simply the heat of the moment; and its fucking boiling.

Our courts are the sacrosanct cornerstone of the South African constitution. And while our leaders might treat them as canine fecal matter beneath their shoes, the general public is required to regard their verdicts as gospel. However, in yet another case in Kwanokuthula township outside Plett, a man who had served his allotted jail term of 18 years for child rape, was shown the wrath of the community he returned to and was killed within days of his homecoming. Now Im the first person to think child rapists should have Hummers slowly reverse over their testicals, and 18 years doesn’t cover the deed, but the man served his sentence under SA law. He abided by our country’s legislation and did his time. If you have a problem with that, vote the rule makers from power, fuck even draft a complaint with your municipal counselor, but to go all Boondock Saints on a dude who has experienced 18 years of ass rapeage isn’t the correct way to instill a sense of obedience.

The idea of killing someone because they stole a cell phone is archaic at best. I don’t see the mobs of this world lining up outside Luthuli House to stone the thieves who steal billions of Rands of public funds every year either. But this only serves to highlight that the law enforcement in the majority of this country is failing worse than Tom Cruise’s attempts at heterosexuality. Mob justice leaves itself open to catastrophic wrongful convictions. A man inLimpopowas killed recently after he was found sleeping in a barn where stock theft had taken place. An eye for a cow? Doesn’t quite ring true and most certainly wouldn’t pass scrutiny in civilized society. We have an army equipped with enough artillery to make Pakistan spread her legs, yet we cant police our own townships? Get the military involved, hold the leaders of these mobs severely accountable and prove to the masses who get implicated in these killings that there is recourse. Because currently, our mobs are making Al Capone seem like Pope John Paul at a soup kitchen!

That’s right… Idols 8 auditions are set to take place around the country during February 2012. The much anticipated Season 8 of the hit South African TV show is going to be back on all of our screens again this year.

Auditions for this year’s season (to be screened on M-net & Mzansi Magic) will be going down in 4 cities around the country during the month of love, meaning that the queues of hopefuls (some arriving from the smaller SA town) are going to be out of hand.

There are a couple of things that you need to know about entering-

* South African citizens between the ages of 16 and 30 (on the day of their audition) are eligible to enter Idols.

* Those younger than 18 have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian and all contestants will be asked to present their ID documents at the registration, which will take place on the day of auditioning.

* Musical instruments will again be allowed in the audition room

Auditions will take place at the following venues:

Johannesburg: Sandton Convention Centre – Saturday, February 4

Durban: Ushaka Marine World – Saturday, February 11

Cape Town: Grandwest Entertainment World – Saturday, February 18

Kliptown, Soweto: Walter Sisulu Square – Saturday, February 25

I cant wait to see hilarity ensue when all the “shower singers” embarrass themselves on national tv. I’m hoping that this year we unearth another Elvis Blue- and while we’re at it, we could sure use another Adeline Mocke- heaven knows the world needs another mooiness.

This year the Premier League has been more interesting to watch than slow motion replays of large breasted mooiness running. However, the year thus far hasn’t been without it’s own share of scandal- specifically around England and Chelsea captain John Terry. Adding yet another notch to the current Terry bad karma scorecard is the apparent use of his image on a tobacco warning labels printed on cigarette packets in India.

The somewhat blurred image, which in my opinion is clearly that of Blue’s captain, Terry above a warning that “Smoking Kills” on a box on entjies was created by the government’s Directorate of Visual Publicity.

Terry’s reps have sent the matter to their lawyers to take appropriate action. Johnny boy is still facing criminal charges in Britain over allegations of racially abusing QPR’s Anton Ferdinand and now has had his image used to deter people from smoking. If you smoke your lungs will look like John Terry’s off the pitch career… that should be enough to put you off from ever touching an eintjie again.

Earlier this week, Antonio from The Hiive dropped me a message with a little bit of info about what he and his team of developers have been working on for the past year. The Hiive is a brand new Blackberry app that provides you direct access to an online nightlife centered community by the same name.

Essentially it is a very slick looking digital community based on user generated content focused on nightlife. What this means in plain English is that Clubs, Promoters and partygoers will be able to upload content that makes your city and evenings a little bit easier to navigate. Club owners and promoters will be able to list their upcoming events and you as the app user will be able to use search filters to sort all of the events happening near you that suit your music and entertainment tastes right from your Blackberry. This also means that you will be able to upload photos of the party that you’re at, while you’re still out- helping others make up their minds about whether to come through to join the 5 people on the dancefloor at that party you’re at, or instead hit the one that’s getting more positive feedback in the Hiive.

The website and Blackberry Mobile App allows users to:

• See what’s going on in their city, or in other cities around South Africa

• Filter through events based on your own personal preferences

• Get information about venues in and around their city

• Get all the necessary info about an event that you may be interested in

• View maps on the location of an event or venue

• Post, or view comments made by other Hiive users whilst at the event

• Upload, or view photos uploaded by other Hiive users whilst at the event

• Share all your Hiive comments or photos on your Facebook or Twitter account

• See how many Hiive users are attending an event

I’ve been playing around with the app a little bit over the past few days and have noticed a couple of things-

I’ve got a Blackberry Bold 9900 Touch and when switching between searching normal events and going through club listings and cycling the load time is a little bit longer than I would like, even with the new OS installed. The app also unfortunately doesn’t support touch functionality and navigation but at least from what I could tell the battery drain wasn’t too bad at all. Once you’re in the app it’s fairly easy to navigate with looks and functionality that share many similarities with Ubersocial for BB. The list of venues and clubs is fairly extensive given that the platform is brand new. I see the whole community and app becoming somewhat of a really advanced yellow pages with user uploaded commentary and tips that make it an interactive environment. It’s mighty useful for finding contact details for venues along with a brief description of what they offer.

It’s going to be fairly interesting to see whether enough people start submitting content and sharing their experience to make the app and platform a digital community with a big stake in the South African market.

You heard right… Jersey shore is on it’s way to South Africa- well at least, two of it’s cast members are. During the next two months The Situation and Ronnie will be heading down to sunny SA to ”make some personal appearances for their endorsement deals”. This means that all the Jozi residents who enjoy klapping it and looking to The Situation for inspiration on how to dress and act when down by the coast will be able to meet their muse.

In a conversation Ronnie and Mike told E! Online’s Marc Malkin that they are scheduled to make the trip to South Africa next month. Keen to make their other plans for the trip clear The Situation – real name Mike Sorrentino went on to say:

“I’d like to meet me an authentic South African girl,” 

Jersey Shore is a reality show, which premiered in 2009 based on the lives of a group of 20-something Americans with a penchant for making all yanks look absolutely nuts (and not in the good way). MCBN watched virtually every episode, very entertained by the musings of Snooki and the crew and to be honest we think it’s cool that they decided to pop around to South Africa because we’ll finally have the chance to test out their so-famed partying prowess. Only thing is, they’ll be rather difficult to spot between all of the rest of the Ed Hardy wearing beefcakes that pack out Sandton and Cape Town during Summer.

All four guys confirmed that they’ll probably do at least two more seasons of the show with at least one out of the country- like when they visited Italy.

“I want to do Australia,” The Situation said. “All the girls in Australia are hot.”

I was watching the E Channel, recovering from my New Years hangover, when good old Ryan Seacrest reminded me of the fact it was awards season right through January and February. The Grammy’s is the major music awards ceremony for the season and Sonny Moore, better known to the rest of the world as Skrillex has gone onto to make history getting nominated for 5 Grammy’s In December (which coincidentally is the same number of award nominations for Lady Gaga and Katy Perry combined).

Here’s what the Electronic artist had to say:

“I was actually on my bus, just about to sleep,” he said of what he was up to when he heard he’d been nominated. “I was in Nottingham last night, chilling in the Sherwood Forest, and my tour manager just pops his head into my bunk while I’m sleeping, screaming like ‘Yeaaah!’ And we had been having some drinks, having a good time, but I didn’t really know what was going on, and he told me I had gotten a nomination — I didn’t even know it was more than one until later.

“And then I went back to sleep, actually,” Skrillex laughed. “But it’s crazy; it hasn’t really hit me yet. I almost don’t even know what it means, in terms of the big picture. This whole year has been insane, and these are surprises and things beyond my wildest fantasies … and I’m just so thankful to have a great team and people that support me, man, because we’ve come a long f—ing way, man. People didn’t believe in us, and we built this incredible team and system, and it’s pretty awesome just to get that acknowledgment and do it with the people you love.”

A big fuss was made about Skrillex’s nomination in the Best New Artist field — becoming the first DJ to ever be nominated in the category — up against other mainstream cash cows like Nicki Minaj, J. Cole and Bon Iver.

“Whether it’s on an acoustic guitar or if it’s on a computer, music’s music, and the most important thing about music is the emotional impact it has on people and culture,” Skrillex  said. “I’m only hoping that my nomination this year will carry on to the next year, and open doors for more people to come up and be noticed and recognized as actual musicians.”

It really is amazing to see how much electronic music has spread in the past couple of years- almost every song you hear on radio these days has a slamming base line, hoovers and synth wobbles in them. Personally though, I cant wait to see what Skrillex wears to the Red Carpet at the awards…

In rather typical fashion our first post for 2012 comes a day late. Yes, New Years was incredibly awesome- we’ve consumed enough food and booze to keep a small army of power hungry dictators happy for weeks. Now… We’re broke. Quite a list hey… always interesting to see what South African wanted to more about in 2011. Let’s hope that next year serves up just as much exciting news.

Fresh after a South African woman was executed in China for smuggling tik another Saffa woman was arrested in Bangkok’s International airport after police said they found 1.5kg of cocaine hidden in her dreadlocks. That’s enough cocaine to keep Charlie Sheen busy for at least 3 days.

Nobanda Nolubabalo, 23, was searched on Monday when police said they noticed a white substance in her hair shortly after she stepped off a Qatar Airways flight that originated in San Paulo and flew through Qatar to Suvarnabhumi Airport as reported in the Bangkok Post.

The search uncovered 1.5kg of cocaine with a street value of 4.5 million baht (about R1.2 million) hidden in her dreadlocks, authorities said. Apparently the chick had been hired to do the deed for around R16 000- yes that’s not even enough cash to buy a car or a house or anything worth risking your life for (not that there’s much that you should risk your life for).

Police said the suspect admitted smuggling the drug and said she was on her way to deliver it to a customer at a hotel in Bangkok. 

Yesterday saw the release of the first Official trailer for “Men in Black III”, putting an end to what is almost a 10 year wait since we last got to experience the escapades of Agent J & K.

I quite enjoyed the last two installments of the MIBs and their neurolizers and judging from the trailer, we’re all in for more of the same action-comedy with crazy aliens, one-liners and massive guns that make cool noises. From what I’ve read the plot involves time travel, which allows Josh Brolin to play a younger version of Tommy Lee Jones (the guy is getting a little old for all of the stunts) as most of the movie is set in 1969. I can’t wait to see Will Smith bring back the same killer humour to the character of J and see exactly where this big budget movie ends up.

The movie will be released in the US on May 25, 2012.

THIS YEAR’S Cape Town Bike Festival (CTBF) has been cancelled due to lack of sponsorship and ticket support for the top level event. What was to have been a major event on Cape Town’s calendar and Africa’s first and largest bike and lifestyle festival, the CTBF was to feature international artists, riders, expos and celebrities at the Cape Town Stadium from 16-18 December.

“Two weeks ago the company was still hopeful we would be able sell enough tickets to make the event happen on advice that an event like the CTBF is a walk-in event and that significant ticket sales would only start happening closer to the event,” says CTBF CEO De Wet Du Plessis. “Although substantial communication saw ticket sales climbing on a daily basis, viability was not assured and although we have spent a considerable amount of money in trying to realise the Festival, we believe it would have been irresponsible to continue under the circumstances and in the end not able to pay vendors or refund people who bought tickets. “It has been a personal dream of mine to make the Cape Town Bike Festival something of substance and an exciting annual event and I apologise for the inconvenience the cancellation may have caused,” added Du Plessis.

All ticket holders will be refunded and those who bought tickets from Computicket can contact the vendor for refund while those who bought directly from Cape Town Bike Festival can contact the company (info@capetownbikefestival.co.za) in this regard.  Again, I am so sorry for the inconvenience and disappointment caused.

We were all rather sad when Animax was removed from the list of available channels on the DSTV bouquet… it meant no more ninja warrior and no more laughing at Asians. So while cruising the net as I usually do, I saw someone like a post on Lil Wayne’s page and thought I would check it out… I was quite shocked & stoked at the same time to see what he had posted on his fan page:

After doing a little more research, I came across this article on the net and this is what it had to say:

Lil Wayne and Eminem are hitting the road together.

Weezy revealed the news yesterday on his Facebook page. The two rap titans will be hitting Fiji, Australia and South Africa.

The full tour itinerary has yet to be announced, but the two are scheduled to perform in Melbourne, Australia on December 1st, followed by Sydney on December 4th.

Wayne had previously announced he would be playing shows in the South African cities of Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban starting on December 7th as part of his I Am Still Music tour.

The shows in Africa will also feature Young Money artists Mack Maine, Gudda Gudda, Cory Gunz, Shanelle, Jae Millz and T-Streets according to MediaUpdate.

The demand for tickets is Durban has been so high a second show had to added. At this point it is not known whether or not Eminem will be playing any of the previously scheduled Lil Wayne shows in South Africa or if more dates are being added.

Due to everyone clamouring to buy up tickets to the Lil Wayne I am Still Music tour, the local promoter, Canoc Productions and media partner Channel O announced that Rick Ross and Young Money crew, Corey Gunz, Gudda Gudda, Mack Maine, Shannel, T-Streets and Jae Millz, will perform at the Coca Cola Dome, on Saturday, 10 December 2011 as well as on the 9th. 

That’s right, all 2000 extra tickets were snapped up and now they’ve added another date! Tickets are now on sale at Computicket. This extra show will also feature Rick Ross and the Young Money Crew on stage with Lil Wayne.

I have a feeling there is one more big suprise left with Canoc Productions and Channel O whispering about a one-night only performance by a “surprise” artist. 

Golden circle tickets cost R 750 each with seating in the R 600 and R 400 categories. The Lil Wayne “I Am Still Music Tour” begins at the Bellville Velodrome, Cape Town on Wednesday, 7th December with limited seats still available. The tour ends at the Wavehouse in Durban on 11th December 2011. All shows commence at 20h00.

Black Tuesday was the day that all fighters for freedom of speech and democracy wore black in protest of The Protection of Information Bill in the hope that a public interest clause would be added to the document before it became law. The actions of these brave people weren’t enough to sway the decision of the Government in favour of keeping the media free and sadly the dream of the South African democracy was a thing of the past. It did however highlight the shift in thinking that we are experiencing in South Africa and the World in relation to inclusivity and unified thought.

Today sees the launch of Rolling Stone Magazine South Africa and what I hope will be the first step in us forming a sense of what popular culture consists of in The Republic. Traditionally, the magazine is aimed at featuring everything from young visionaries and icons to politics and movies and aims to deliver the best possible representation of pop culture and public opinion- something that is evident with the choice of Hugh Masekela as the image for the first edition’s cover.

Today is the age of social media and development of popular culture that is for the first time representative of all parts of the globe thanks to the internet. Social Media has allowed us to create amazing domains for idea exchange and consumption of media and culture. The unified opinions and sharing of experiences and thoughts through social media allowed countries like Egypt to topple entire regimes. The influence that we have on each other is obvious. All you have to do is look around this particular page to see the all of the auto-suggestion going on while you read and interact with us. It has become common place for content, media and societal norms to be determined by the input and needs of those that consume it. And so it should be. If you are not able to interact with media (or government for that matter) and shape your experience of the world both online and when you’re unplugged (although we’re never really unplugged anymore) then we are not yet where we should be.

There are a couple of individuals in the online industry, particularly within the bloggin fraternity- I use the term loosely as everyone who’s nobody has a blog these days- that have done exceeding well to build a very positive internet brand with significant followings. Having a good brand or product, complete with a loyal following is one thing but translating this to real world gains is the real crux and measurement of success. The guys and girls that have become aware of this fact and have managed to make this connection in a way where social media and public input and opinion still allows them to stay marketable have essentially shaped a new form of hyper-entrepreneur. They are the new rockstars. Able to influence popular culture with relative ease and turn this into monetary gain.

They’re hanging out in the trendiest places, eating, drinking and doing what, according to popular culture, you should be doing- displayed in high megapixel glory all over the internet and are accessible from almost everywhere in the planet. What makes them different to the young visionaries or icons of the past is the fact that a great deal of what they do is directly influenced by the public who enjoy voyeuristically consuming bits of these internet stars lives. And I mean literally influenced by clicking “like” or retweeting a link. So are these not then the most accurate depictions of popular culture and the quest to what is as close to one singular thought pattern across the globe as we can get?

Whether this is the case will be seen in publications like Rolling Stone South Africa and how they choose their content along with which individuals feature on the covers in editions to come. I think the people who intrigue and influence us the most are those that have stories much like our own. They are going to be the new rockstars. However that’s if we still have the right to engage in social media, share opinion and blog in South Africa. Yup, don’t think that we wont eventually be controlled here too- The Secrecy Bill is only the beginning.

While we wait to see how everything pans out, swing me another beer or two so I can write my next post.
