MyCityByNight went to one of our favourite restaurants this past weekend, the legend that is the Chapmans Peak Hotel, or when you know and love it the way we do, you can call it Chappies!

It’s difficult to even describe in words, without actually seeing our faces, how awesome a setting and place Chappies is. The moment you arrive, Gary and his team make you feel like you coming to their home for dinner, and in a way you are, after all from the home like feel inside to the buzz of the deck and bar, it’s all things GREAT!
Naturally the MyCityByNight Crew got shown to our seat of choice on the deck overlooking the sentinel and bay. So it was hard to kick back and realise just how great Chappies is! For a good 5 minutes, no words were uttered and we just took in what is one of the nicest views in Cape Town and sipping on a few awesome frosty’s! Weapon of choice on another so called winter’s day in CT, a Castle Light, ice cold, just like the Vanilla man said it should be!

One thing is for sure at Chappies, choice is in abundance, and it’s ALL good, and I mean ALL! We started off by having the calamari starter and when I say it was ***slobber*** the most ***drool*** AMAZING ***drool even more*** calamari on the planet I would still be lying because I did not say in the GALAXY! OMG WTF, and all the other acronyms there are to describe all things great, this was one of those moments! Clichéd I know, but it was truly like butter melting in your mouth and the batter was like something I have never tasted… FLAVOURS!
I mean just look at this! (No one will judge you for licking your screen)

How was the chef or the waiter (Loyiso, you our waiter of the month and a legend) that was about to tell me the specials going to top this? We thought not, as it was world class already…
Enter the CALAMARI & PORTUGUESE STEAK… the two house favourites! Pan-fried calamari and juicy cubed fillet steak in our special tangy sauce and the SPECIAL of the day Spikey Dory!

Don’t worry kids, this Dory is safe!

Let me tell you, that if I said that the Portuguese steak and special sauce (as I’ve mentioned the mental amazingness of the calamari) was somewhat eye spinningly, spine tingly and heart pulpitatingly AWESOME, I would be close on 4.837 million km’s away from what it is… YOUHAVE TO TASTE IT! As for the Dory, well that was like eating a calamari steak, so if you not a big fish eater, then this is for you, and it was AMAZING! Fresh from the harbour and straight to the plate, what more could you ask for!
Now desert… Sorry, but being the sweet enough guys we are at MyCityByNight, we weren’t going to fit in any desert, but it all looked good.

Prices at Chappies are great and all within reason for what you getting. Starters range between R39 and R49, with mains being between R79 and R595 (for the seafood platter that has enough seafood to sink an illegal fishing trawler). They currently have a winter special on till the end of August, so HURRY!

The beauty about Chappies too, is the inside area, so rain or shine, you have a perfect location for lunch or dinner with friends, family or that someone special.
At the fireplace is where you can plant the seed and moves on that someone special in front of the fire or just sit and discuss with your posse your next great ventures and of conquests completed while sipping on something that takes you to place you want to be, like a Hennessey! The bar at Chappies has it all!

First to fifth date factor:
You want to hit a homer, take her here (note the fire place area on those chilly evenings)… for that matter if you really feel you found that ‘special someone’ and want to cement the deal, or convince him, take him here! The food will make him love you, and you may just hook your very own catch of the day.

If she is paying:
The prices at Chappies are fair play for what you getting, so you won’t really be out of pocket you lovely ladies. You’ll even have some currency left to take the beau you with for a couple of cocktails or cognacs in the bar, which can be rather vibey!

If he’s paying:
Go to the bar first, have some pre lunch or dinner drinks. It can be rather vibey (as mentioned) in there and if you a smoker, this is the only place you can smoke, however you can be smoking hot, anywhere (which most MyCityByNight mooiness are)!
As with her paying, the prices aren’t that bad for what you get, so if you really out to get him and ‘its over’ the worst you going to do is R595 for the seafood platter for 2, but you not really out to get him then as you will just be sharing it!

So Chappies and Gary, thank you once again for a SOOOOPER memorable experience! You can be assured; many more MyCityByNight meetings will be taken there!
Till next time foodies, just remember to nibble, munch, swallow and enjoy!

NOTE: The deck cannot be booked, but when you call or arrive, mention MyCityByNight and I’m sure they will do their UTMOST to accommodate you the way only a MCBN’er likes to be.

Of course you do and you want to know that its good and worth the money!

A few days ago we asked what restaurants MCBN’ers enjoyed and got a healthy response. So we took it apon ourselves to start checking some of them, and others out – We just ooze caring dont we!
From prices and ambience to the food itself, we will make sure you never cock up a first date ever, or a break up date… hey shit happens! We will make sure you choose the right place for the right girl or guy and then hopefully you will cement’ 4th base’ nicely a little later on or ease the pain of telling to waai!

So this is the 1st of many restaurant reviews here at My City By Night.

We thought we would start off with a bang, a little fire and in this case, fortunatley, not ‘Deli Belly’!

The General:
Bhandari is a cheeky little Indian in Westlake Business Park. On arriving your lovely guy or girl friend will feel like you pull out all the stops… It like stepping into The Taj ek se!
Tigers (not the missing one thats now been found), vases and other authentic Indian goodies all over the place.. Not to mention the delectable smell of curry!
What we really like about Bhandari’s is, that there is an awesome ‘loungey bar’ area that makes for great ice-breaking talk or filthy talk (depends where you are in your relationship) and can be enjoyed before, during and after your meal, with a great variety of spirits that will woo the hardest of potential suiters over!

The Food:
Well where does one begin… ITS BEFUCK! From starters to enders and everything in between, its wicked! Authentic, full of flavours and cooked by real Indians and not Knorr or Woolworths packet sauce chefs!
It has flavours to suit all palletes… From woes to ’ey no check it ek se dis ting is FH’ (fucking hot in case you dont know Durban Curry talk)!

If he is paying:
Claim it if you like curry as it aint cheap! You looking at aroundR250 a head. He must really like you! Its the amount you get for your money that makes it really seem a little punchy, but hey, he paying!
However us guys like curry more than the ladies, and you may wonder what kind of a meal is this to take a lady too… So he may be taking you there to dump you and wants to at least have a good meal so the evening is too much of a disaster!

If she is paying:
Then she is letting you down easily guy… It’s over but you get a decent chow! That said, and a rarity, she may just love you so much that she loves seeing you happy and will be guaranteed that you gonna shag her because she is ugly!

Student budget… They have a great all you can eat special on Sundays for R150. No take-ayas, but fill your pockets… Totally worth it!

If nothing else, you got to go there for the toilets! They crazy Japanese things that are probably made by Sony… Check the pics below… Hilarious! The brown stuff on the controller is a bit worrying, but just look at your options folks!!!

For bookings call (021) 7022975 or visit http://www.bhandaris.co.za

After getting too loose from an entire day of drinking in preparation for the rugby last Saturday, I employed some of my better judgement by avoiding the press launch of Tequila Town (even though the open bar and awesome tequila on offer was a fairly big draw card).

While I did manage to avoid being the talk of the Cape Town Press (for the wrong reasons, haha)- I did miss some of the most knowledgeable barmen/barlady/barpeople dropping the wisdom about the most premium of Tequila’s we’ve ever seen. I did however make up for this last night.

After losing our TFC (the football club) indoor soccer game we all decided to pull through to Tequila Town at 39 Buitengracht street on the corner of Castle street to watch Bafana Bafana lay the smackdown on their opponents. I must say after checking the venue out fully, I think Cape Town has been blessed with a super spot to chill out and have drinks over the next month and a bit over the World Cup.

The food is awesome (think snacky meze vibe) and the Tequila on offer is simply out of this world!!! You have the option of putting together your own drink with your favourite ingredients and of course fav Tequila for an entire night of enjoyment. They have an out of this world selection if you’re a tequila fan, with these boys and girls having the last 10 bottles of this one super flavour- I forget the name- on earth (ok maybe not on earth but they dont make it anymore so its super premium and super tasty too)… And I bullshit you not- they honestly serve the best margaritas I’ve ever tasted. If you’r feeling quite pimp- you’re can pay R400 to become a member and what this entitles you to is- an order of 10 different premium Tequila brands, usually not on offer to the normal public… pretty AYOBA if you ask me, considering that the top Patron available for purchase is a measly R400 a shot, ha!

So if you get the chance- pop into Tequila Town, you wont be sorry!! The MCBN crew will probably be making it rain there on Wednesday- so as always if you’re keen to come say hi and just talk smack with us- please pull through!!!

Happy Tuesday… sooooo stoked its not Monday anymore!

I got this fantastic list in my inbox the other day from Karel, with all the specials at some of the best restaurants in Cape Town. Now who ever made this list is a genius, but no one seems to know who, so no one can actually give the credit where it is due. If you want a day to day look at specials at some of the other restaurants in Cape Town, (oh and the clubs) go and check out NoBucks (click here) cause that is one handy webguide to finding out what special is going down, at which restaurant and for how many hours during that day. They are that accurate… seriously though, check them out! But for now, take a look at the list I have for you:

How good is this list? Some of my favourite restuarants are all throwing in some really insane specials. I think I will be heading back to the Five Flies after a recent birthday dinner we all had there. It was insane and to see they have lowered the 3 course meal special even lower then it was when we were there down to R150. Its a given to say I will be there again soon! Oh, did I mention that you must go check out NoBucks as well, they will save you bucks when you need it most. Its a pity some of these end today but there are alot running for the next couple of months! Be sure to check them out…

Seeing as though we showed the latest Heineken ad, I thought I would show you the latest Wimpy ad and I have to thank Miss Pickett for this one as she dropped the link to my Fassschbook page and my goodness, this is a great! I just love the old boy’s face as he hits the glasses, oh so serious. As well as the mother at the end doing the robot. The costumes they are wearing are just out of this world. As you can see, this family has spent alot of time at Wimpy by the amount of collector glasses they have accumulated! It seems that companies are using that VIRAL element on the internet a lot more and in such creative ways. I think its great and more companies should think about this when doing a marketing campaign.

What a classic ad and I can honestly say I reckon I can see this spreading around the internet sooner then later. Good work Wimpy… I think I might just have to come and claim my collectors glass with that amazing meal:)

What do you think of this? Two pieces of Bacon, two strips of cheese and two piece of boneless chicken fillet all stacked on either side of the cheese and bacon to make a “sandwich” with out any buns! I guess KFC are trying their best to lower the amount of starch you have but increase the amount of fat you have or just lower the amount of starch intake. I must admit though, this does look mouth watering. I wonder if it will make it’s way down to SA. I would like to get my hands on it or atleast to try it. The burger… Oh, sorry, I mean sandwich was launched in USA on the 12th of April and I can only imagine the yanks must have gone mental for a bite of this. Check out the advert for the KFC double down in America:

There is no room for a bun this product is so dam meaty. They even give you the choice to have it fried (They call it their “Original Recipe”) or have it grilled but I guess either way, you are going to be eating loads of fatty chicken and bacon and cheese for that matter. For any of you calory counters out there, this is what the KFC Double Down consists nutritional value:

Just to give you a little breakdown in nutritional value of competitive burgers/sandwichs (In the USA) take a look here:

McDonalds Big Mac – 540 calories, 10g saturated fat

McDonalds Crispy Chicken Club Sandwich – 660 calories, 8g saturated fat

Burger King Whopper w/Cheese – 760 calories, 16g saturated fat

Subway Cold Cut Combo – 410 calories, 7g saturated fat

I am super keen to try it and so are many others in South Africa. Its been the talk across a couple of blogs as well as food and restuarant sites. It has even got itself a facebook group called Bring the Double Down to SA, KFC group, if you would like to throw your weight around and add some pressure onto KFC about bringing down this bunless meal of joy to any fat loving, grease eating KFC fan, then (click here)

We all got treated to an amazing dinner at the Five Flies restaurant just off Long Street last night for Dusty’s birthday (my goodness the food was amazing). I got thinking about Madam Zingara on the way home and what ever happened to them and their flipping deliciously amazing chocolate chilli steak. I used to love going there and enjoying a little half circus half acrobatic show while eating, so you can imagine my happiness when I found out this morning that the Madame Zingara show will be returning to Cape Town in May! May seems like an awesome month for Cape Town in general, I really think this World Cup has boosted our city to new levels.

This is what Food24 had to say about the re-opening:

After a year abroad, Madame Zingara has finally set sail for her hometown in South Africa. Arriving back in Cape Town at the beginning of May, she will be ready to welcome guests back for her 2010 Love Magic Tour.

This grand dame of burlesque style has travelled the world for nearly a hundred years with her billowing velvet canopies, mirror columns and ornate booths, and the spirit of her past will continue to weave tales through the night.

Threading her magic, wonder and light through her Theatre of Dreams, Madame Zingara will again bring happiness to her South African fans. With over a 1,000 bevelled mirrors that reflect a million tales, her magnificent Theatre of Dreams will enthral all who enter through its stained glass doors.

This dinnercirque spectacular will be produced and directed by the award winning duo of Richard Griffin and Valentina Love. Richard and Valentina will team up with both local and international stars, finding those hidden gems that made this theatre of dreams a household name.

4 course menu: Antipasta, Starter, Mains, Dessert & Coffee

Wines: Selection of Cape favourites

I suggest you pre book as there is only 420 seats available on the night and the show is out of this world, but one thing I know is that the food there is truly marvelous, I would suggest the chocolate chilli steak to any, its mouth watering. The new venue is going to be out in Century City in the usual dinner-cirque styled Madame Zingara tent and will be opening to the public in the early days of May 2010. I honestly cant wait, going to enquire about a booking soon soon!

Venue: Madame Zingara Tent

On Saturday night Kreg and I decided to meet up with Richie Rich, Onaj and Brad for a bit of a bender at the recently renovated Peddlars on the Bend in Constantia (jes-witha-Z joined us later too).

It was something we’d been looking forward to for ages and knew that when left to Richie to most generously and efficiently organise, it was definitely going to be a night to remember.

The evening started off with us sitting in the outside section watching Chelsea get thumped by Tottenham Hotspur (for you Kreg, hehe). It was a little bit chilly, even with the heaters switched on and Kreg was a little bit angry, so we drank. Nobody really got crazy with our first couple of rounds as none of us wanted to approach the task of spending a fairly large voucher at the revamped Peddlars too aggressively (basically we wanted to be standing at the end of the night… or alternatively lying down som… ah you get the picture).

A couple of rounds of drinks later and the hunger had begun to kick in… Thankfully, our waitron (so politically correct) eventually decided to come back to her incredibly well-behaved table and provide us with menus to make our choices from (basically a subtle way of saying she was KAK). Regardless of this fact we were pretty amped to try out some of the yummy on offer- I considered the prospect of eating a burger with Cumberland sauce (trust me we spent at least 20 minutes debating the value of eating anything with Cumberland sauce in it- thus cleary exposing our ignorance of what this condiment actually comprised of).

Everyone EVENTUALLY made their choices and this is some of what we were fortunate enough to bless our belly’s with (NOTE THE EXTRA CRISPY ONION RINGS!!! Boooom! MyCityByNight special).

We even had dessert… TWICE. All in all the food was quite mystical and we would definitely recommend Peddlars on the Bend for a superb vibe and awesome munch- we just wouldn’t recommend our waitron… even to Hitler…

Just a word of advice… be careful of the EEL

Light waves emitted from the big burning ball of gas at the centre of our solar system is scattered by atmospheric particles and the blue light, having the highest wavelength, gets through the most, making the sky blue. (I know, I’m still not sure what that means either, but I doubt anybody is going to argue with you other than Onaj…)

What is the most addictive drug out there?
This one is pretty easy- Nicotine, which is followed quite closely by Heroin then Tik (methamphetamines). Although as far as I am aware, Kreg is the most addictive drug known to women across the world…

Why don’t moths try to fly to the sun?
Moths use the moon to navigate, always keeping it at right angles, so they can migrate. If they try to keep your normal household electric light at 90 degrees it just makes them go in irritating little spirals (apparently they never confuse the sun with moon in the same way they do with lights).

Why does sweat smell?
Bacteria present on all of our bodies feed off of dried sweat, which causes the delightful “hot-dog with crispy onions and all the sauces” smell. Sweat itself isn’t actually stinky and instead has a slightly musky pong that unconsciously attracts us to each other.

Why doesn’t Donald Duck wear trousers?
