I will be out at Earthdance on the Friday but Ricky will be tearing up the dancefloor as usual at Assembly. The boys from Get Dumb (the last one is TONIGHT by the way) Nick Supply and Chris Jack will be dropping some sick tunes and from what I have heard, Nick Supply has been hard at work in the studio lately. The newly formed duo international DJ Sam World and local DJ Tariq Khan make up 1522 will be quite the act to see next Friday. They going to be jamming behind the decks with 4 turntables… Now that is taking things to the next level. There will definitely be some mad energy behind the decks when these guys will be ripping things up.

Last Thursday I was invited to what turned out to be an absolutely awesome premiere of the BANFF extreme mountain activity festival which I’ll get into in another post to come- it was gnarly. The event was housed at a rooftop cinema of the Grand Daddy Hotel in Long Street Cape Town, in amongst several luxury themed trailers (I know- oxymoron right?).

I was lucky enough to be one of the media attendees that won a one night stay in one of these themed trailers redemable for that night only (thanks Cape Union Mart & Traffic Integrated). Stoked with life- I proceeded to make arrangements for my toothbrush and whatever else I’d need to make the stay more comfy/enjoyable and eventually settled into the Ballad of John and Yoko trailer (with the biggest bed and shower)- what??!!! haha.

It was truely mystical as the inside of the trailer was filled with a guitar, old school record player, drawings and books. Oh and there was a mini-bar of course (I killed that shit!).

It truely is an experience like no other- you really do feel transported into some strange USA hickville, Britney Spears spawning town and thus act accordingly… or maybe that was just me. They really do go out of their way to stick to the theme throughout the trailer- even right down to the bathrooms. Personally I thought these little touches are what made the Airstream Penthouse trailer park pretty awesome.

To go with the launch, in true adidas style, they have made a SERIOUSLY awesome advert! As usual it has all the legends that are adidas Originals, Beckham (go gaga girls and Ricky) Snoop (go nizzle in your hizzle guys) the one lad from Oasis, Noel (he is proper well ‘ard innit)!

So being the thorough guys we are here, we decided to drop a call to find out when this collection was hitting our shores, and what a time to phone, they have arrived and are in stores NOW! Haezer has been on what I would call a recent remix rampage… Remixing some of the biggest electro acts out there at the moment and the best news of all is that they (fresh remixes) keep coming in. His WTFIH was remixed by the likes of the Cyberpunkers (Italy), Saint Pauli (Germany), Deadbots (Ireland), Belzebass (Italy), Geht’s Nog (Germany), Noise Generation (Germany) and Trump Disco (Australia). The Cyberpunkers remix made it to number 5 in the top 100 on Beatports dance chart. The Trumpdisco and Cyberpunkers remix are the absolute tits! If you want to hear some of his latest stuff, get down to Fiction on the FIRST Friday of every month where himself and Markus Wormstorm have joined forces to give us a  unique Friday night with a little different flavour. On Friday we saw Nuwave and 5FM partner up to bring international legends Basement Jaxx to the ever so beautiful city of Cape Town (followed up by a party in Jozi).

Lets start with the venue…

The party was hosted at the V&A Waterfront at a venue called The Lookout. It was pretty epic, with some really awesome views of the harbour and some sand and palm trees outside, which made the jol feel rather tropical. The venue could definately have housed more than the 1300ish people that forked out their cash to go see the Basement Jaxx play (unless you won the MCBN competition that is) with ease.

However, I have to mention the absolutely MASSIVE fail with regards to the bars and bathrooms. Let me just say… there were FAR too few of both!! No-one should wait 30 mins or more to get a drink at the ONLY bar in the venue and I am fairly positive that its unnacceptable to wait even 15 mins for a whizz if you’re a girl (its harder to hold it in- apparently).

Next up the artists on the night…

All of the supporting acts absolutely rocked it and represented hard for SA including the likes of Roger Goode, who had a stormer and Goodluck who had the unenviable task of coming on after Basement Jaxx.

I also have to give a special mention to the guy (pictured above) who was singing with the dj’s that were on just before Basement Jaxx. Failure guy… to sing over the likes of Deadmau5 Strobe at a dance event is sacrilage- you should never be allowed back to one- ever.

The Basement Jaxx set:

The Basement Jaxx themselves played a set composed entirely of dribble- jungle funk/commercial/euro rave- being a fan it was horrendous to listen to. Its like they thought SA was musically uneducated and mildly slow.

The mixing was utterly shocking & then one of them was sampling his own voice over the Raindrops track, which I adore- and THAT was super shit. I promptly went outside to enjoy one of the better things about the party… the venue’s view.

Such a massive change from the last time they were down here with their live set along side the likes of Eric Morillo etc at the Castle like 6 years back. After the likes of Paul Oakenfold earlier this year- which tore the roof off of SA venues- I think that Nuwave and 5FM kind of missed the boat with booking the Basement Jaxx (although its not really their fault that the BJ’s pnwed it so hugely). I’m sure that the next event they have planned on their calendar is going to be something we can all get hugely amped about (for the most part they generally are)…

Booom!

After a lengthy sabbatical – due to a mixture of the madness of the World Cup, University’s constant neediness, and a dash of laziness- I have decided to get back on the proverbial horse and get writing. This horse, of course, belongs to the fine MyCityByNight stable, who, just in case you didn’t know, are recent nominees of not one, but two SA Blog of the Year nominations (so go vote!). Having said that, time to put pen to paper, or finger to key, or boat to river (that last one doesn’t really apply)…

On Friday the 3^rd September was a party that I personally was waiting a long time for – the first of the monthly ‘Contrast’ parties – at Club 121 on Castle Street. As the name suggests, every party features two contrasting, but ultimately complimentary, genres of music on each of the venues two floors. The predecessor to the Contrast parties was an event held at 121 about a month ago featuring the international Tech powerhouse D.A.V.E the Drummer and saw techno/tech house/progressive pounding on the upstairs floor, whilst the best psytrance kept foots stomping on the downstairs floor. I think it’s safe to say that the party rocked – MCBN’s main man Kreg and I had trouble deciding which floor to hit! It was for this reason that I looked so forward to the latest instalment….

Friday’s Contrast saw the interesting pairing of techno upstairs, dubstep downstairs. Not content with a couple DJ’s on each set of decks, the organisers stacked the plate with a whopping 10 (yes, TEN) of the headphone wearing menaces, leaving the line-up resembling that of a mini outdoor party. On tech duty upstairs was:  Craig Shacid (Organika); One Track Mike (Tech !t Or Leave !t); Danalog (Hype Media); T-Minus (Teknotribe); Lil Phil (Hype Media) and Emoutikon (Psynopticz) while dishing out the grime downstairs was: Fletcher (African Dope); Funafuji and Ish (both Step Up) and the UK’s Tempo. With such heavyweights of Cape Town’s Techno and Dubstep scenes in the mix, things were shaping up nicely.

To start with, the venue is really conducive to this concept. The two dance floors are pretty insulated from each other sound wise, so there is no unwanted crossover of beats. There’s more than enough floor space and the bars are long (longer is always better!). A visit to the little boy or little girl’s room is more fun than usual too (well, that depends I suppose…) with the bass of the adjacent dance floor resonating around in there like an Ibiza basement. We’re talking serious urinal head banging! The décor is not to be sneezed at either – the organisers went all out. Mad visuals and lighting were projected onto all areas of the two floors; including on to the DJ booths themselves through a mesh stretched over the deck master’s platform (check the pic). A couple flat screens here and there completed the visual assault. The sound was loud and ‘bassy’ (future word – you’ll see!) enough to jam to, but was still clear enough to talk to your mates which was testament to the quality of the audio equipment.

At the end of the day, nothing really matters if the music is not up to scratch. You can have a sick venue with the hottest ladies, but if the music is shit then you’re not going to do well (with the exception of Tiger Tiger it seems – its success still baffling South Africa’s top minds…). So how was the music? In a word…BANGING! For quality of tunes, and precision of mixing, you could not fault a single DJ on the night. It really was top drawer stuff! Contrast provides an opportunity too to experience something really unique – descending/ascending the stairs from one floor to another, crossing the ‘BPM threshold’ of the music where dub becomes tech or tech becomes dub. It’s like a musical smoothie! Delicious!

With competition from Basement Jaxx, Assembly, Fiction and the first outdoor of the season (Sprung), Contrast did not draw the crowd it so richly deserved. It is a top quality event and I highly, highly recommend you make it to the next one. I mean you clearly have good taste, what with reading MCBN and all…

Just after Akil, who is a member of old school rap crew Jurassic 5, has just been down in Cape Town… Mac Lethal will be arriving soon. Another big playa in the underground hip hop scene will be jamming at Zula next weekend. People got a taste of some real hip hop for the first time in a while at the Akil event and as summer approaches the acts are going to be flowing in.  We have got Dv8 Entertainment to thank for that. I only properly recovered from my Friday nights hangover yesterday but it was worth every bit of it. LE CASTLE VANIA, take a bow! You tore Assembly apart on Friday along with every other DJ that night. It has been a while since I have gone out to a club and been treated, DJ after DJ to a musical treat. Each DJ stepped up after the next and threw their own unique style into their allocated time slot. It was honestly mind blowing how good the music was but we will get to that later in the post. Assembly had been transformed into a clubbers playground with a visual set up to rival any of the biggest parties out there. The stage was rigged with “3-D” screens showing some bad ass visuals throughout the night. There was an insane lighting set up and decor had been spread across the venue. It shows why Assembly is the premier party destination in Cape Town at the moment.

We decided to arrive early to avoid the queue because people said that pre sold tickets had been sold out and the line can sometimes become a little more depressing then waking up on a Monday and thinking its a Sunday. So after a few of us had cleared a couple of bottles at the MCBN headquarters, we headed down to Assembly only to arrive to one of the quietest lines I have ever seen at the entrance of Assembly… EVER! That didn’t worry me; in fact it made me more stoked that I could actually get to the bar without a hassle for the first hour or so. Birdlife Battle Beyond The Stars started off the night but I was unfortunately chilling in the Annex so I didn’t see much of his set. The B Team stepped up next and they were dressed to the occasion. You don’t need to tell these guys what to do when they get behind the decks. They do things their way and proper! Their track selection progressed nicely and they got the crowd jamming and the dance floor filling up nicely, a perfect set to get the party started. They were having such a jam behind the decks and it only got the crowd more pumped up for LE CASTLE VANIA set later in the night.

Next up, Double Adapter – these two brothers have been killing things up in JHB and absolutely blew my mind. I hadn’t heard much about these guys and didn’t know what to expect. They came in with a “take no prisoners” attitude and slammed it right from the start. The beats got harder and darker and by now the dance floor was getting a little crazy. The Double Adapter duo were going mental behind the decks, jumping on the DJ box and heading banging upfront of the stage, we were even blessed with a stage dive during their set. It was so sick. One of the brothers, dressed in a full white suit had a wireless chaos pad which was the highlight of my night, their energy and stage antics are just to sick and got me super pumped up for Le Castle Vania… I really hope we see these guys back in Cape Town more often, they definitely suite the Cape Town electro sound.

One of the most anticipated electro acts that I been wanting to see live and in the flesh stepped up. He started off really hard with the classic remixes he has done mixed in with some of the beats he has produced and slowly progressed into the more Indie sound he is known for. Later on in his set he dropped some HUGE tracks including some Wolfgang Gartner and Dada Life tracks as well, what a legend. By now the crowd was going insane, he had them eating out of his hands. The whole front section of the dance floor looked like a mosh pit. I had luckily found myself a safe place to jam and didn’t move for a good 5 hours. I was lucky enough to have a partner in crime who didnt leave our little battle station we had made our home for those 5 hours. Myself and Pesos jammed solidly and Saturday we had to paid the price for it. I must apologise, as everything from after Le Castle Vania’s set became a big blur. I don’t remember much more then the first 20 minutes of Haezer and then Gordo’s set but have only have good things. This definitely has to go down as one of the best parties of 2010 for me.The music, the vibe, the crowd, the DJ’s, the visuals, the mooiness, the pre drinks, everything… It turned out to be a sick night. MyCityByNight was there, right in the front… Beats Raving… Thank you Discotheque, Assembly and ofcourse LE CASTLE VANIA for an unforgettable night.

No it’s not really the end of the story and would be unfair if we were that shallow. So bear with me and this graphic rant at the hatred I have (sure you all do too).

Those of you that follow us on twitter, and let’s be honest, you should be (mycitybynite_ct), would have seen the tweet re a traffic cop.

Yes HATE is a strong word, but in this case it’s very just.
Picture the scene, you are STAVING, you spot the’ Dirty Bird’ and have this uncontrollable urge to indulge in the filth that is a KFC! Oh shit, there is no parking! Wait, there is but ‘oh no’, it’s a red line… Oh what the hell you ‘only going to be a second’… you scream in faster than a Japanese racing snake to get the sexual filth monster that is a Zinger Tower Rounder meal with large fries and bottle of water, cos you want to be healthy! You out again before you know it, with heart racing and sweaty palms to get the golden breast into your mouth…

And then… BANG…. You got a traffic cop fining you!

‘But, but, but I was just 2 minutes man, please’… Nothing, you R500 down and that’s it! On top of that, getting MIGHT pissed off that your ‘security blanky’ of the moment is getting cold, and that is just not cool!

So this brings me to the HATE factor. I’m also sorry that I’m painting all traffic cops with this tar brush, but if you want to not be associated with this bull, then you need to do something about it…

The Dirty Bird, Somerset Road, yesterday at 12:40… I’m all for the urge, but… wait for it… PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH AND THEN, MAYBE THEN, WE WILL RESPECT YOU AND PAY OUR FINES!

So this is it MCBN’ers, if you see a ‘Law Enforcer’ of any kind doing something that they shouldn’t be, photo it, mail it and we will forward it on to the relevant enforcement agency, like we have with this one until they realise that they are NO BETTER than us, and NOT above the law!

19 year old ILLtastic started producing music two years ago and performed his first DJ gig earlier this year at Fiction’s Untamed Youth. Now, having played at the likes of Assembly, Bang Bang Club and Dansville  and along side some of our local favourites, the young dude looks in line to rip it up into the 2010. His production is getting better with every track he produces, this is one guy to keep your eye on.

We’ve been rather busy at MyCityByNight of late- slamming out the best entertainment, sport and lifestyle content for the benefit of you our much beloved fans! Being the total media whores that we are, we figured that after internet and radio the next logical platform to harass everyone on would be that of the good old idiot box (never quite liked that term).

Some of you- Janez (spelling?!) and Jeannie D fans especially- will know that Top Billing is currently doing a presenter search after the chick that one it last time was so incredibly crap that people would choose to watch paint dry or grass grow rather than subject themselves to her ginger-haired personalitylessness (i so just made up that word).

We all know that in South Africa- the only possible measure of how well you are doing in life is directly correlated to the amount of appearances you’ve had on Top Billing- it really is the be all and end all. The witty jokes… the clever puns, the great locations and 100% entertaining presenters combine to make this one of SA’s premier locally produced shows. We figured it’d be nice if MCBN could be on there- we want to taste the success like a pudding on Sunday!

So what Stacky and I have decided to do is enter the presenter search which takes place at the Fire & Ice Hotel on Friday and Saturday and take along our trusty HD camera to capture as much of the excitement as possible along the way- we’re probably going to be rather naughty. Who knows- they might actually like us and then you could all have some semi-normal presenters on the show (oh & we promise to tap that if we do get there- you know who i’m talking about)- wow cant believe I just wrote “tap that”.

So there you have it- MyCityByNight is going to try and get on Top Billing- by hook or by crook… We want the fame of people as awesome and thrilling as Noeleen- booom!

I got some inside information from a reliable source within the industry that Bang Bang is closing down. It seems like we will be saying good bye to the Bang Bang club on the 11th of September. They will be having a closing down party that night as a proper good bye and send off to the club one last time.

The club will be closing on the 13th of September for structural changes and renovations and will be opening up again as a Jazz Club. I guess someone thought that would be a better idea for town right now. Who knows, it might work but it means its at the expense of Bang Bang. Oh well…

Another club bites the dust it seems. Bang Bang opened over 3 years ago in 2007 if I am not mistaken and has seen some HUGE international DJ’s play to a packed out crowd of people. Some of the biggest weekly nights have been run there and some are still currently running, such as Psynoptics, FML Fridays. Some of the classic night’s run at the Bang Bang included Get Dumb, Bliss and Anything Goes.

So I think we should pay our respects to this jol as it has had its good times, but I am also glad to see it go so those stupid bouncers are now jobless (yes I know, that is mean, but what evs)… I will miss the jugs that is for sure!

MAC LETHAL BIO:

Mac Lethal thinks Nikes are obscenely trendy. He also wears them from time to time.

After putting in over a decade of hip-hop elbow grease; he one day realized he has put entirely too much time into honing his craft. Necro Bio:

Necro is the brutalest rapper on the planet. He has reached legendary status by dropping non stop consistent hardcore albums on his own label, Psycho+Logical-Records. If you havent heard of Necro you must be living under a rock. Here is your chance to get to know the sickest fuck on earth.

Necro’s story begins much like your typical hip-hop story. Raised in the Glenwood projects of Brooklyn, NY, he was poor and began selling drugs at the age of 16, got into hip-hop…blah, blah, blah. But Necro is anything but your typical rapper. While some of his biggest influences are hip-hop greats like Rakim, Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane, the harsh realities of his life also drew him to the sounds of bands like Slayer and Megadeth. Although he was able to recite all the lyrics to Slick Rick’s “La-di-da-di” at 7 years old, he would also blast Metallica’s “Kill Em All” out the window of his bedroom so all the kids in the projects could hear it. He even admits to crying when Cliff Burton (Metallica’s bassist) died. Nope, he is not your typical rapper.

Beyond being just an artist, Necro is a true businessman. While dealing drugs he was so organized he even made up business cards for fiends to page him. While he was successful, the day he got paid $3,000 for one beat he realized there was a less risky way to make a living. When he turned to making music, the lessons he learned hustling propelled him to independent success. If he isn’t one of the most well-known rappers in the hip hop scene, he certainly is the hardest working. It took Wal-Mart 11 years and 15 stores to gross over a million in sales, Necro has done $1.2 million+ in half the time. He recruited hundreds of kids to sell cds for him all over the world until some smaller distributors helped him get even more product out. He is New York’s answer to Cash Money or No Limit. He is the street version of Richard Branson, Tony Robbins, Russell Simmons, and Ray Krok combined.

Whether it was back in the day getting booed at the DMC battle contest in 94′ for wearing a Charles Manson t-shirt, to recently headlining a sold out show in NYC wearing an Obituary hoodie – he walks to the beat of a different drummer, literally. Igor Cavalera, drummer of heavy metal legends Sepultura is one of the many headbangers that Necro can count as fans. People like John Tardy of Obituary, Away of Voivod, members of Slipknot & Hatebreed who normally would say “rap is crap” have embraced him. Sure, he may be one of the most brutal rappers ever painting pictures of death and gore. But he also represents every kid in the struggle and sick fuck who is down and out, cast aside and forgotten by society.

Necro may quite possibly have some of the most dedicated followers in rap history. He strikes such a powerful chord with his fans that they permanently mark their bodies with his name. He even has the pictures to prove it – hundreds of them. His art transcends genres.

Gerald (because he is very clearly a rather big fan and will distract others from my girly laughter with his inappropriately loud chuckles)

Kerry (because her chosen life theme song was about getting drunk, which we can relate to and she said that she’d kill at least 3 of our fans- we like having you guys around)

As far as I am aware the show is almost entirely sold out (hurry to Computicket now) and I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited to see anything Australian… Ever.

The line up for Rocking the Daisies has been finalised, with a couple of slots still to fill. The line up on all floors are looking pretty dam sick. I am really amped for the Red Bull Tent the most. Friday night will be dishing out a little Blush n Bass, Bteam and Haezer, who will be doing their thing. Saturday, I can officially say that all hell is going to break loose when Niskerone steps up and continues into Sibot, Liver, Enough Weapons, Anthea and Killer Robot for the final techy set to end the Saturday night music. I cant wait for the Daisies this year, I think it’s going to be a big one.

Oh my, the Cuervo Nu Beats Barn looks insane as the beats progress into Saturday evening and Saturday night with some balkan gypsy beats. Toby2Shoes will be dropping some of the most gypsy’d out, hillybilly balkan swing. It’s going to be so much fun, that music is just so much fun to listen to. There still some spots to fill up and I am sure the crew at Rocking The Daisies have got some awesome acts who will be named in the next couple of days or so. Dont worry, we will keep you update on who they add into these time slots.

We booked ourselves a little sea facing palace on the slopes and kick started the party with a midday barbeque

After that we headed over to the quirkily named Noisy Oyster, Paternosters premier gastronomique destination… Ask about Athini there… could get you a huge discount, or not… no promises… Anyways discount or not Karl (General Manager) and Brian (Executive Chef) will make sure that you go home having experienced something that can only be described as magical… the best part is that the menu changes everyday which means you are guaranteed the freshest of ingredients and oral pleasures (take that how you want)

Paternoster is definitely worthy of African Travel Desks 5 star travel destination rating!
