Before we kick off the weekend we just wanted to give you all a quick reminder about Flash Republic and Foto Na Dans this weekend at Kirstenbosch Gardens for the Old Mutual Summer Concert Series.

If you haven’t heard of them yet, where have you been? Flash Republic have been banging out the hits for over 6 years now and alongside Foto Na Dans this is going to be one of the best concerts in the Summer Series. Foto na Dans was formed when vocalist Le Roi Nel joined the likes of Theuns, Dirkie, Neil and Alex, who had previously played in a band together. It took seven years in and out of projects for the members to finally find the right combination- make new two ways about it these boys love Afrikaans.

Cape Fight League is the Mother City’s very own Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Fight League. The very first event under the newly formed banner will take place at the Bellville Velodrome on February 4, 2012. The League is really about showcasing local fight talent, both amateur and professional within a well organised structure.

The night will culminate with a Professional MMA Lightweight fight between Chris Bright and Ian “Chucky” Swart. The two have met before in the EFC cage and this event is shaping up to be a fight of epic proportions. The skill and experience of Chris Bright against the brute force of Ian Swart is something not to be missed. Swart had this to say about the upcoming fight:

“Time to let Chucky loose again in the cage on the 4 of February against Chris Bright. This time it’s mine. I almost had you at EFC. This time my hands will fly like knives and leave deep cuts – and don’t think the ground is going to kill me again Mr Bright. Got something for you in Chucky’s pocket!”

If the fights aren’t enough to get you there, the night’s entertainment includes a battle of dance crews, quality food and beverages on sale as well as the super-hot CFL ring mooiness. The festivities will all be led by Master of Ceremonies, Ferdinand Rabie (so fun is definitely assured). Official Cape Fight League sponsors will also showcase and sell products which include meal and vitamin supplements, as well as clothing.

CFL has something to for everyone – Whether you’re an avid fight fan, or just up for a night of great fun and entertainment.

We don’t often cover events like this but we thought that this particular night out at Nisha was worth a bit of mention because of the idea behind. Tonight Nisha hosts a benefit party for Claudia Dalias with all the door proceeds going towards aiding her recovery.

Claudia was unfortunate to have lost her right leg in an horrific car accident, thus needing quite a bit of help and support to make the incredibly long road to recovery a little bit easier. Her friends decided the best way to do this was throw a party in her honour (what better way really?).

Avicii is on his way to South Africa this March and after the very successful Deadmau5 South African tour in 2011, the team behind the event set a new standard for what we came to expect from party-lineups. The deep South deserves to see the best International Electronic Dance Music acts the World has to offer and H2O, Anything Goes and Showtime Management with Lovoka as the headline sponsor are making sure that this happens.

The 22 year old Grammy Award nominated Avicii, known by many other names including Tim Berg, Tom Hangs, and Ashwin, is the Swedish electronic dance music phenomena currently ranked 6th on the DJ Mag Top 100 DJ’s for 2011.

Cape Town has been blessed with a plethora of fantastic little markets to explore over the weekends. One of the places that has been generating quite a bit of interest amongst locals is The City Bowl Market on Hope Street (you see it’s even located on an aptly named street).

The City Bowl Market on Hope and it’s curators have spent months searching the reaches of the Cape for the most exciting stallholders and products around. At this market you can get everything from bagels, Indian, sushi and croissants to fresh produce, bacon-and-egg rolls, ciabata, cheese and everything in between. The venue for the market itself is an old amd rather grand building in Gardens with a fascinating history behind including being used as a Zionist Hall, Jehovah’s Church and Indian Temple before lending itself to becoming a market.

Die Tuindwergies’ first two singles were # 1 on the SA Top 30 and the # 1 most requested tune for three consecutive weeks on Tuks FM. The debut singles have also done well on other campus stations (MFM Kovsie FM, PUK FM, etc..) ‘Kopskudkinders’ was even recognized as the most popular song on Jacaranda and took the # 1 position on Jacaranda FM Top 10. “Opvoeding en Leiding” the 3rd single from the album, proved the band’s diversity. *’Kopskudkinders’ also pocketed Die Tuindwergies their first MK Award for Best Newcomer of 2011. They released their debut album in August 2010.

Willim Welsyn en die Sunrise Toffies second album, Kompos en Kraai was nominated for a SAMA for best Afrikaans Rock album in 2009. Willim Welsyn’s second solo album, Maanplaas was nominated for a SAMA for best Afrikaans Alternative album, a Huisgenoot Tempo Award for best Kopskuif (Afrikaans slang for alternative) album and a Rapport Afrikaans Vonk Award for best Afrikaans Alternative album in 2010. Maanplaas won the Huisgenoot Tempo Award for best Kopskuif album in 2010. His third album, Smeer die Weerlig, was released in 2010.

Although approaching the scene with international ambitions, Holiday Murray as a collective is driven by a powerful sentimentality towards their hometown and country and intends to perform as far and wide in South Africa as possible. The naming process was simple, the name Holiday Murray belonging to a tall thin wooden man who aids the writing process, attends every band orientated event, and takes centre stage at every show. They released their self-titled debut album in 2011 to critical acclaim.

New Holland

New Holland arrived on the SA rock scene in December 2007. Since then their impeccable revel rock has triumphed everywhere they’ve played, bringing with them a wall of devoted fans that now are hankering for more. With two albums to their name, namely 01 and Exploded Views, New Holland needs no introductions and in February they will be bringing the best of their music to Bohemia.

A spasm of electronic, a shiver of dirty, filthy, salt up your nose kinda bass. Jam Jarr is a glitch-rap duo made up of Soundproof and Waykin Bakaman, and they’re here to tear your eardrums asunder with a cache of tracks ranging from dubstep to glitch-hop, and all the other beat-stops inbetween. Their first EP – Fat Fruit – was released on African Dope Records, and their second – I Am The Danger – is scheduled for release in March. A release on Dutch record label “Subfinity Records” in collaboration with ‘Process Rebel’ is also coming out early 2011.

Jam Jarr is – One producer, one MC, a bag full of death-defying bass and a tongue-lashing rap festival, all taking place in a circus clown car with no shock absorbers. If it’s festivals and clubs you want, they’ve played at a ton: Rezonance, Earthdance, The Tunnels, The Village, (and many other funny names), The Assembly, Fiction, The Cape Town Castle. They’ve gone to Johannesburg, Mossel Bay, Grahamstown… it’s all in there.

Bruce Willis?? aka Tyron Kuypers has been around for a couple of years based within the local Cape Town electronic music scene.

Starting off as an electro based Dj back in 2006, Tyron handled majority of the major festivals and events around Cape Town riding on the success of his brand Arcade.

2010 he partnered up with (Michael Hazell) and the founders of (Don’t Party) to realize and implement a shared vision which was to showcase the music and events industry in its full glory from a youth perspective in the form of www.dontparty.tv.

As an artist “Bruce Willis” has cemented himself as a prolific part of the South African electronic music scene and as showman he endeavors to play the crowd and caters to the floor with his tuned ear and love for contemporary music. This has secured him staple and consistent bookings with venues such as, (The Assembly), (Fiction), (Zula Bar), (Mystics in Stellenbosh) and most of the major festivals in South Africa.

JONNY ROBOTIX

JoNNY RoBoTIX has had music in his circuitry since he was sparked to life. Rock and metal inspired him and he programmed himself to play the drums. A brief stint in a high school band followed and that all ended rather badly after the lead singer started to let the principal know exactly how he felt about his recent expulsion.

The Prodigy was the first electronic type of music to grace his auditory circuit boards and because he was mostly well, electronic himself, he fell inlove that very instant. For years he graced the dancefloors of Clublands finest establishments getting his nightly fixes of electronic stimulation.

The rock and metal long forgotten, he still yearned to have control over the music he loved, just as he was able to when thrashing out the drums. So it was not long until his visual sensors where scanning the DJ booths of the clubs he visited. Watching, listening, learning and downloading, all the while doing his, well, robot dance of course.

JoNNY RoBoTIX is a founding member of the Fukk It movement, bringing you the hottest Bass music parties in Cape Town.
